Credit card photo confirmation

Ordered from Bike24 tonight. I've ordered before through them, including pikes in the last few weeks.
Used same card etc, but got this:
Dear Mr Moore,

Thank you for order at Bike24.

Due to the requirements of our credit card provider, we need to ask you for a photo of the front side of your credit card. Please black out parts of the card number, but your name and at least the last 4 digits of the card number have to remain visible.

To protect you and us from credit card fraud we have to verify that the credit card is actually yours. Most card fraud attempts are made with electronically obtained card data. The person who uses such card data will most likely not be able to provide a picture of a physical card. From our experience this procedure works well to block such fraud attempts.

We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause.

Order number for questions: 114097510

Yours sincerely,

Mandy Mergen
anyone had this? Sounds odd. I'm struggling to think what it could do if not legit, if not showing whole card, and if it phishing, what's the point? :noidea:

I know these guys well and can sort it out for you. Just send me photos of the front and rear of the card and it will be all good...trust me ;)

I have never had this happen and I would be inclined to tell them to get stuffed but realistically they have the info on the front of the card any way :noidea: i would call my credit card provider and ask them what to do

I can't see that it's a scam at all.

I did once get asked for a confirmation number from my cc provider on an overseas purchase, which required me ringing the bank and getting an approval no. that I then emailed - would much rather have got the email you did as a solution.

It's to prove you are actually in possession of the card and it's not a hacked number, although that's the reason for the ccv number.

Yeah, but why now, not 2 weeks ago when ordering pikes?
done anyway. I don't have enough money to warrant stealing. :high5:

You would not be at any risk with what they have asked. They have even asked you to black out all but the last 4 dig, they can access nothing with that info really.
It's up to a business whether they use CVC codes or not, they chose not to. Asking for a photo is essentially the same thing....
They could have had a recent security/fraud problem and have implemented this as and added precaution...

they might have a security limit, if someone spends so much in a certain amount of time they verify the person?

Your bank will have a security algorithm that looks for out of context purchases anyway. I'm sure they'll put te card on hold if its used to purchase anything other than bike parts, lentils, BBQ shapes or internet porn.

that's probably why... card fraud can often be multiple smaller purchases to not appear as one lump sum on a card.

$1400 for me isn't 'smaller' for me. Have they learned nothing from my reputation which I've spent years forging?

did you happen to buy some shimano conical washers? that would set the alarms off that it's fraud.

Competitive Cyclist have a better process. After my order they put a small charge on my card less than $3 in pending state and I had to tell them what the amount was down to a cent.

On the bright side at least if there is fraud you will have yet another post for confession of the fwits

Bike24 are well known for doing this. They aren't the only provider that does it. What is unusual is the fact that they've asked you to do it even after you've already had a successful order with them. They usually (so I'm told) do it first time if you start with a decent sized order.

That said...I've ordered quite a few things from them including a Feedback Sports workstand...and they've never asked for a look at my CC.

Over $1000 for an australian order? That won't be very common - hope you don't pick up GST for that.

I'm here till Thursday.

Either way don't reply to the email they sent you, or use a hyperlink in it. Go to their website and use details from there. If word gets out this is a regular thing from legit businesses you can be sure we'll end up getting them from scammers too and they'll conveniently forget to remind us to blank out the card details.

Also there is probably no harm in asking them if it's a legit request 'just incase it's a scam'. Send them an email asking if it's legit. They are trying to check on you so you can check on them :)

Did that. They say they are legit. Sounds legit.
Replied by email, the same email that had confirmed order. Blanked out numbers. All will be good :behindsofa:
