This CVT has already been released (or is about to be) on an Ellsworth cruiser and some dutch commuter bike. Its a neat idea but it suffers the same problem most other alternative transmissions for bikes do - its heavy. Over 4kg. These traction drive cvts have been developed for cars and rely on a special oil. Only having point contact with the balls means you have to make everything fairly beefy to transmit load without deflection giving rise to slippage.
The Honda cvt is another cool piece of engineering using a series of variable cranks and sprag (one-way) clutches. I downloaded the patent 'cos I am interested in these things. I'm sure its the future as like disk brakes the cost/weight will eventually come down, especially when the big companies get involved.
