Hey Guys,

I have been MTBing in southeast QLD for a while now. Have a Trail bike and DH Bike.
I think i have been kidding my self, how is any one supposed to ride their DH bike enough to be competative at races with practically zero legal tracks.
Yes there is Clear, and a couple of secret tracks, not to mention ones that get closed, but how can the sport survive with so little DH riding except for Race days.
I have been fighting the DH trail battle for years and im thinking its time to either make some thing happen or give up with DH Trails.

End Rant

Not just QLD

I deffinatly think we need to take a page out of NZ book and start taking this sport more serious on a national level not just state ,I get annoyed when I see road races been advertised but dh event including the worlds was not seen on tv at all. We need everyone to get involved in pushing the laws to help develop the legal DH riding in AUS.
Secret trails are the way to go. In terms of getting quick alot of training can and is done off the DH trail. On the trail is always more fun.

Im sure there are organisations pushing the laws towards the type of involvment NZ has with the riding scene, hopefully someone can post this group/s up and everyone can get invovled.

Everytime I bring up DH to someone who does not ride they are oblivious to what it involves. eg.I was asked the other day "do you go over jumps and stuff", I then decided to show him some photos in which his response was along the lines of "you ride down that?,Sh*t, thats nuts"

give up

give up and move to Canada or US ....

been listening to shit from council and various other authorities in council that deal with trail building etc for over 8 years now. Load of bollocks and a waste of your own energy and time when you get worthless replies from council over and over. They work on the idea that the more they refuse or reply at such a worthless degree your esteem will degenerate into a stale puddle of why bother and you give up.

If you chose to pursue it, good luck.

Yeah I'm new to SEQLD this year and I've been thinking the same thing.. Down in NSW there are club races run at Ourimbah and Awaba on a monthly basis but up here all you have is the State series, which I'm stoked for.. but surely there's a big enough community of riders up here to have something more regular? I would be happy to be heavily involved in at least running a regular (monthly) club level event at an approved (i think?) track like Beerburrum.. I know its no worldcup track but its still enough for a good day of riding, and a great place for people who are new to the sport... a regular club level race would also be an ideal entry level point for newbies.

Consistent, successful and regular small events like this would be a great building block and trial and error testing ground to build towards a more positive and active reputation with local communities/councils. I think it would also give the state series alot more exposure in the long run as a big event.

Not to mention that a regular race environment like this would fulfill the need mentioned above for more time on the DH bike in general! Probably not the best idea to encourage masses of people to hit illegal/semi-illegal tracks though.. that idea is part of the reason for difficulty with councils by the sounds of things..

All that said, something is better than nothing and I can't wait for the sunshine series rounds, thanks to the guys who are already putting effort in to organise them.

after reading all the closed down and why isnt there any threads on this forum, ranting and raving myself, the one thing i have not seen or heard mentioned is; where is MTBA on all of this? after all we pay our memberships to them and i know we get the insurance cover and races (unless your in se qld) but should we be asking them to get involved a bit more?

Maybe they are, and if they are i appologise but i never here of them in the mix. i know they are not a big government dept but they are part of the australian sports network so they must have some fairly decent representaition somewhere in the puzzle palaces that dictate what we can and cant do, and if so why dont they appear to be doing anything for DH. i know for a fact that the AIS in canberra just ask and they recieve if they claim it will help Australian athletes succeed, maybe thats what we need because lets face it the councils are not going to listen to the little people.

oh no i appear to be ranting again.

good question...... plus i don't understand why government and local council don't push a sport which promotes wealth for local business and not to mention health

By way of disclaimer, I'm playing devil's advocate here, and am as frustrated by the lack of legal DH tracks in SEQ as anyone else on here.

**

With that in mind..

Steps are being made. It's just slow going, as there is a significant amount of resistance and ignorance to change and what exactly DH is. We all know this, and there's no arguing with it.

At the moment I am aware of 2 tracks in SEQ (Toowoomba and Beerburrum) that are legal. It's just unfortunate that Toowoomba is currently unridable due to the floods. However, these will soon be joined by 2 new tracks at the Mt Joyce Recreation Park.

The government has put a significant amount of money into Mt Joyce (or at least that's my understanding). So we can certainly see that positive events are occurring. I hope as much as anyone else on here that Mt Joyce is the shape of things to come. Andy (RB user) is the man with the inside word, but there's more info in this thread.

For those that missed the response to the hoo-hah with Dump Run last year, make your way over to the "Mountain BUG" on Facebook. It's a rider-run lobby group working to get more tracks in SEQ recognised as legal. If you've got the motivation to rant, then why not see what help you can do over there?

this is not a dig by any means as i know you are involved any way you can, i have seen you and your avatar arounfd with lots of meaningful contribs, BUT, the mountain bug last had a meaningful post otherthan nostalgic memoires about 6 months back, it looks like its just been given up(and i,m am member so i am guilty too), and unless they put in a decnt shuttle road with access for all, then, and i sincerely hope not, mount joyce will fail on the DH side. people will not want to travell 2-3hrs to do push runs. sorry if it sounds abit negative but reallity has to faced, and the local councils etc wont see this reallity they will just say, hey we built you a park what more do you want.

the only way unfortunately will be illegals close to home so like french man said, get digging.

Totally agree with you there.

There are more improvement that could be made at beerburrum as well. Also it would most likely be the cheapest to setup with a bitumen climb back to the top.

As far as tracks that are flood damaged or need up keep i would be more than happy to pay a public track "membership" fee for track maintenance......we already pay a memebership for IMBA to ride/race trails on private property.......why not pay a membership to generate more legal trails and with that supply a dog type rego tag that is easily seen for your bike as proof of membership ....... another example is people pay a lot to ride mt buller or bike parks overseas why not have some type of membership for the above mentioned for a local public trail
