Drop some weight

I think that trying to put lipstick on the proverbial pig (Alloy frame) as per Chopper's SB66 is going to hold you back without going crazy with spending....

You should consider what/if any real benefit you'll get and how the weight of the parts will effect the serviceability/durability....

I'm not one to talk but my bling build uses Syntace cockpit parts for the reason that they're not amazingly light, but I'll break before they do.

I went down the road of looking at Tune/AX Lightness/Schmolke for bar/stem/post and they just weren't worth it.
disagree about bars, I have 2 Schmolke bars- the 1st I have had 4? years and only stopped using it to go OS and wider.
Now have a 670mm bar that weighs 100g and have complete faith in it. I got both mine for good prices...
Most people have no problem spending $60ea on a good tyre but won't spend $300 on a set of bars that will last a very long time.....

KCNC/ Ritchey stems are almost as light as a $500 AX Lightness stem and I would not trust a super light post as I have seen a few snap, also don't like their saddle clamps....

For me doing long races with lots of climbing it is great to have a light bike. Last year I finished a 211km race with 7049M climbing. Reliable is good. Light and reliable is even better....

Reliable is good. Light and reliable is even more expensive
Fixed!

Yeah but I'm talking about diminishing gains for $$$
Not sure how much the OP wants to spend...

Art... If a 700mm LOW5 will get you low enough I may be moving one on.
I'm after the same bar in a 740mm

Not sure it will mate. You can score up to 20% off on selected 2014 models in run-out mode at the moment... Upgrading is more fun though. :)
Upgrading is fun. Though initially I was going to sell and go with a specialized dually.
I have looked at your thread on MTBR and that orange epic is very enticing. Just a bit out of my price range after selling anthem.

Thank you! The WC Epic is a great ride, but even at the Expert level you'd be paying well over $6K... The flip-side is that you get a pretty light bike (under 11kg with pedals in stock form for a medium), with very snappy geometry. The new bike warranty is also worth some peace of mind...

Ok, I no longer have this bike. Sorry to waste everyone's time :behindsofa:

Going to go with a new hardtail. Give me a few recommendations / options. Main requirements are:
- 29er
- 1 x 11

The few I am considering are (not limited to):
http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/xtc.advanced.sl.29er.0/14829/66315/
http://2014.merida-bikes.com/en_int/bikes/hardtails/xc-race-marathon/2015/big-nine-team-2101.html
http://www.trekbikes.com/au/en/bikes/mountain/cross_country/superfly/superfly_9_8_sl/#

I did notice there is a subtle difference in geometries between the giant & merida.
I currently ride a 2012 xtc composite 29er which has the same angles/geometry as the giant above. Would I notice a difference in the ride on the merida? I am no expert in this area, so hopefully someone might able to comment?

I will test ride a few bikes, but this will be a few weeks away.
In the meantime feel free to add to the discussion..

You be looking for a XC hardtail or a more fun gravity style hardtail?

Some sweet 120mm+ hardtails out and about in nice slack HA's.....

out of that lot i'd be choosing the XTC... despite their mainstream-ness, Giant make some great bikes.

Given that "Big G" has gone 27.5" to be a point of difference over "Big S", I'd say that your chances on a warranty frame down the track may be limited on XTC.

What's your budget?

I would look at:

Niner Air9 RDO - (probably same pricing as Yeti... perhaps marginally cheaper)
Yeti ARC Carbon - $6240 w X01
Santa Cruz Highball C
Intense Hard Eddie
Pivot LES
Norco Revolver
BH Ultimate

I love the geometry of my Niner... rides better than the Stumpjumper that it replaced.
All of the above would get you some mad street cred too....
