Hi guys, seeking a bit of info about an older type of wheel. Wondering if a ten cog cassette would fit an older wheel, are all cassettes the same width with thinner cogs and gaps or are the freewheely things wider to suit this. Hope this makes sense, cheers limey

8, 9 & 10-sp. cassettes are all the same width. 7-sp. is narrower, so needs a shorter frewwheel body, 11-sp. is wider, but in the case of Shimano XTR & XT the big sprocket is dished back toward the spokes so it fits on the same hub. SRAM 11-sp. requires a special freewheel body due to its use of a 10T top gear.

cheers mate, so as long as the smallest cog is larger than 9 or10 tooth it should be sweet, thanks

You'll have a hard time finding anything with a 9T top sprocket! Shimano do make one, but it's very rare. All MTB 10 or less-sp. cassettes have an 11T top gear, so you can't really go wrong. It's only SRAM's 11-sp & the Capreo (which is 9-sp) with the 9T that are different.
