Just saw this on velonews
Australia ends the year as the 4rd best professional road racing nation. Cadel ranks 5th with a pretty nice stack of Aussies in the top 50.
Allan Davis - 11th
Simon Gerrans - 25th
Heinrich Haussler (yeah, I'm claiming him) 16th
Michael Rogers - 43rd
Stuey - 57th
A stage in the Giro, a stage in the Tour (honourary), plus Haussler's placings in the classics, a grand tour podium, a world championship, Mark Renshaw towing in the Cav for 6 stage wins (and picking up a 2nd place on the champs elysees for himself) are some of the roadie highlights. Also Bobridge's u23 TT rainbow skinsuit is noteworthy.
This was not too shabby a year for a country that is not a traditional cycling powerhouse, and has a population 1/3 that of France, 1/15th of the US and so on. Throwing in Sam Hill's world cup overall, 2 MTB WC jerseys and a very strong set of results at 24hr solo world champs (overall male win, a bunch of great placings) and we are doing pretty well. If only we could string it together in the XC...
