Fractured Patella

Hey,

Fractured my Patella Monday night on a MTB ride.

Just interested to see if anyone else has had this injury and get some info on their recovery and rehab?

Described as a minimally displaced fracture which extends obliquely through the medial aspect of the patella with a transverse component seen within the inferior pole.

Been placed in a splint for at least 6 weeks.

I'm super keen to overcome this asap and get back out on the bike.

Any info on other stories would be great or input/ideas for rehab.

Cheers,
Laura.

Time and patience is your friend, did mine a few years back, 5 weeks off the bike, very painful, was in a sling for 4 of those weeks, came back ok, but was pretty tentative on technical riding to start with, but got back into it full swing a little later, you should be fine, take it slowly when coming back and all will be good!

I'd recommend you take take your time mate in getting back on your bike and listen to the advice from those looking after your injury. A big mistake people make is to rush back before they're really up to it. I had an ACL reconstruction in my left knee done in 1999, and while I was keen to get back to my activities, I did what I was told by my specialist and my physiotherapist and have never looked back. My knee has never given me a hint of trouble, and my specialist reckons I have 95-98% use back.

My advice would be to listen to what your doctors and physiotherapist say and just take your time. You want your knee to heal well first time around, and not take longer to heal because you start being keen to get back into biking. Get it right now and save more heartache later.

All the best with the recovery.

Hi - fractured mine when i was 14, it is by and large a stuffed knee now, cant run, cant ski, can only walk 4 or 5 klms, so i took up riding. Mine was broken for 2 months before it was found, which has pretty much ended up giving me early onset arthritis in that knee.

SO - take the time off completely, when you get to 6week review, thye will xray it and give you some program for rehab - some things you can get away with by going back early, i dont think a knee is one of them. consider yourself fortunate you have it treated from the get go, and the easier you take it, the quicker you'll be back to 100% is my guess
