aparently, if you switch a vending machiene off at the power point, then turn it back on, all the spirally things do a twirl and you get free food.
is this true?

Not always. However, if you shake them the right way you can get free stuff. Just pull it toward you, rocking it back and forth. When you get it rocking enough, and it comes toward you far enough, you will get heaps.

"Heaps" meaning crushed to death.

I get the feeling if it was that easy, perhaps the vending machine company would have realised the issue and fixed it.
