Freewheel sticking - what the?

Hi,

Since the Jet black mud fest, my rear hub seems to catch when freewheeling. Like, when the wheel is spun, and the lovely clicking sound purs softly away, the casset seems to catch on the odd occasion and turn.

Any thoughts on how to repair this.

Shimano XT rear free wheel hub.

Ive not taken a freewheel hub apart but imagine either the bearings need replacing or there is water in the free wheel.

ANy help on DIY maintainance would be great. Even Zinn doesnt have anything on it (much)

Take it out, clean it well, re grease, put back in, if this doesn't help it may be the spring on the paws. It shouldn't be because normally if there is something wrong with the spring it doesn't engage.

My guess would be the pawls are sticking due to springs not returning.

Disassemble and regrease and inspect for anything obvious. Mate had similar issue and ended up failing completely, leading to long walk home.
