Getting started in DH questions

I'm sorry guys, I really am, for the amount of questions I have put into this one thread.
I don't have a DH bike yet, but looking into getting a rig.

How do you go about entering races? I know you need a license or something, but am I better off heading down to a few competitions to watch before I enter any, to get a feel for it? Beginner races?

I have a DMR Trailstar, which is pretty much built for hardtail DH (just maybe a few part swaps needed), but would it be worth getting into the HT DH scene? It would save me a few thousand dollars! How big is the hardtail DH scene in Victoria/Australia? Are there HT only races or do HTs compete against full sus? If so, how do they usually fare against the duallys?

Again, I'm really sorry for all the questions.
Cheers guys,
Lach

I went to a few ride days so I could learn the tracks and meet some of the guys that race already. That way when you race for the first time you will at least know some of the guys by sight at least.

You Yangs and Eildon are the two tracks I learned first.

Take a look at the info in this thread for a bit of info on starting off racing in the upcoming Vic DH series
