The Brisbane City Council has secured the services of MV Australia better known as Glenn Jacobs and Dylan Jeffries to build trail at Mt Coot-tha.

Fresh off their multi-million dollar project building the site for the 2009 Mountain Bike World Titles in Mt Stromlo in Canberra the MV crew are coming to Brisbane! Commencing March 13 MV will be undertaking a mountain bike only trail construction project at Gap Creek in Mt Coot-tha Forest.

The internationally renowned MV crew have built trails around the world for the International Cycling Union (UCI). Highlights include the 1996 Worlds Course in Cairns, the 2000 Sydney Olympics Mountain Bike course and of course the site for the 2009 Mountain Bike World Titles in Mt Stromlo in Canberra.

The trail known locally as the Lantana track for the density of the invasive weed species Lantana Camara has some sections of historic trail in poor condition. These sections originally old logging trails dating back to the mid 1940's when the area contained clear felled logged coups. The trails also saw decades of uncontrolled four wheel drive and motor bike use before becoming council park land. In 2004 this trail was adopted as designated mountain bike only trail. Sections of the Lantana trail also known as the muddy mile were identified as areas of excessive erosion that are contributing to the siltation of local ephemeral water ways. The inclusion of this trail into the track network was to provide a North-South access for users into the Gap Creek side of Mt Coot-tha Forest. Approximately 700m of trail will be closed and remediated so that it can return to the forest. To replace this a new trail will be constructed along the lines of an old logging route along the valley floor that has a more sustainable alignment.

The construction site will be closed to the public from Tuesday 13 March through to the expected completion of the project in mid April. For local riders this will mean no through access on the 'Lantana' Trail to Highwood Rd Trail and only the first link between the lower end of 'Lantana' and the Quail Trail will be open. Link as it is known is currently being improved and realigned as a Gap Creek Trails Alliance (GCTA) volunteer Trail Care project so just be aware that it may not be how you remember it next time you use it.

Glenn is also looking forward having a chance to speaking to the local mountain bike community about all things trails at a Gap Creek Trails Alliance (GCTA) Beer and Pizza night. Date yet is to be determined and I have yet to confirmed the beer or the pizza with GCTA pres Gillian either but it should be all good. ;)

Attached are a couple of picture of me determining the trail corridor. There is lots of Lantana in this valley! There are however some really nice areas of forest with dense canopy to ride under. More pictures as they happen.

Trail plan overview

The attached images gives an overview of the trail alignment.

The green line is the proposed alignment linking with Dillon Rd. the blue lines shows the existing trail. The current 'Lantana' trail between the Quail Trail and the point marked C will be permanently closed as will the trail between Highwood Rd trail and point C. This is approximately 700m of trail. The new purpose built mountain bike only trail will be about 1200m in total.

I have also included the 1946 areial photo showing the previous logging use of the area.

Hey Oppy, what's the planned style for this trail. Can we expect it to have a similar level of technical difficulty to the other trails in the area?

Green

The Lantana trail runs pretty much along the valley floor. This makes it the flattest trail at Mt Coot-tha. Given that it's flat and the rest of the trails have a fair bit of up and down and also that this trail joins straight to the picnic area and car park this is going to be an easy trail.

The intial idea is to make the main line International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) Green trail difficulty rating . It would be nice to include some alternative lines on sections that are rated blue and maybe if it can be worked border line black. However the priority is to get the trail in first. Refinement and alternative lines are a secondary goal that can easily (and may have to) come at a later date.

Have you ever heard of Rustlers Loop Trail in Frutia Colorado? Any how it was designed as a "practice loop" where less experienced riders can tune their bike handling skills before tackling some of the more challenging rides in the area. It also has signage during the ride that helps educate new riders about ethics and skills of mountain biking. It also makes a great warm up trail for more serious riders.

The idea is to make Lantana something like that. Given the increase in participation in mountain bike riding at Coot-tha of late this is sorely needed. Yesterday I saw a kids birthday party in the park. I then passed 20 six year olds and a few parents on Lantana having a ball. Today marks the start of bike week Gap Creek hosted the "come and try" mountain biking day. There were many first time mountain bike riders and begineers who had a ball. All of them rode the lower section of Lantana as their first ride of the day before taking on some intermediate loops.

Making Lantana into a satisfying loop trail will boost the enjoyment and participation of mountain biking in Brisbane.

Ok, so witch's hats, round-abouts and stop signs. :D cool.

Yeah, I came across the party and a few of the parents/kids combos on Lantana. I had to get up onto the side of the trail to let some past. Those training wheels are like the little blades on the Roman chariots. ;)

Umm yeah update. The guys are nearly finished. We just need some good rain to bed it down before they can finish it.

hmmm. . . did you negotiate rain dances as part of the deal?

If they're going to do this, let us all know so we can see how it's done. :D
