The Brisbane City Council has secured the services of MV Australia better known as Glenn Jacobs and Dylan Jeffries to build trail at Mt Coot-tha.
Fresh off their multi-million dollar project building the site for the 2009 Mountain Bike World Titles in Mt Stromlo in Canberra the MV crew are coming to Brisbane! Commencing March 13 MV will be undertaking a mountain bike only trail construction project at Gap Creek in Mt Coot-tha Forest.
The internationally renowned MV crew have built trails around the world for the International Cycling Union (UCI). Highlights include the 1996 Worlds Course in Cairns, the 2000 Sydney Olympics Mountain Bike course and of course the site for the 2009 Mountain Bike World Titles in Mt Stromlo in Canberra.
The trail known locally as the Lantana track for the density of the invasive weed species Lantana Camara has some sections of historic trail in poor condition. These sections originally old logging trails dating back to the mid 1940's when the area contained clear felled logged coups. The trails also saw decades of uncontrolled four wheel drive and motor bike use before becoming council park land. In 2004 this trail was adopted as designated mountain bike only trail. Sections of the Lantana trail also known as the muddy mile were identified as areas of excessive erosion that are contributing to the siltation of local ephemeral water ways. The inclusion of this trail into the track network was to provide a North-South access for users into the Gap Creek side of Mt Coot-tha Forest. Approximately 700m of trail will be closed and remediated so that it can return to the forest. To replace this a new trail will be constructed along the lines of an old logging route along the valley floor that has a more sustainable alignment.
The construction site will be closed to the public from Tuesday 13 March through to the expected completion of the project in mid April. For local riders this will mean no through access on the 'Lantana' Trail to Highwood Rd Trail and only the first link between the lower end of 'Lantana' and the Quail Trail will be open. Link as it is known is currently being improved and realigned as a Gap Creek Trails Alliance (GCTA) volunteer Trail Care project so just be aware that it may not be how you remember it next time you use it.
Glenn is also looking forward having a chance to speaking to the local mountain bike community about all things trails at a Gap Creek Trails Alliance (GCTA) Beer and Pizza night. Date yet is to be determined and I have yet to confirmed the beer or the pizza with GCTA pres Gillian either but it should be all good.
Attached are a couple of picture of me determining the trail corridor. There is lots of Lantana in this valley! There are however some really nice areas of forest with dense canopy to ride under. More pictures as they happen.
