Woohooo!!
My Lovely lady and I are taking the bikes to Cairns for a week in June. Definitely want to hit Atherton and Smithfield mtb park. Anyone recommend anywhere else or want to show us some trails? And where is a good MTB friendly place to stay? Thinking Holiday park style thing close to trails...

There is a great park (Big 4?) right near the Atherton trails. Even had a covered area with hose. bike work stand and tools. Def stay there again a few days next time. Didn't get to ride Cairns but rode Townsville quite a bit while passing through. We drove up for the RRR at Pt Douglas last year.

Hahaha, sorry to pint out the elephant in the room but seeing a link to some swimming holes then a link to a crocodile farm is funny. I saw a crocodile take a dog off the side of a boat there years ago and felt scared getting into the resort pool!

Oh boy so many things to do!

Behana Gorge is nice for a ride and a swim -

Hartley's Crocodile Adventures is a favourite of mine -

Of course there's the reef to explore too.
Have you ridden Smithfields and Atherton much then? Looks like Smithfields offers more challenging riding? We're thinking of basing in the Big4 at Smithfields and doing a day trip to Atherton? Behana looks great. We'll add that.

Was it one of those horrible little yappy handbag dogs?

I'm a 5 minute ride from Smithfield :)

There's a social ride on Thursday at 5:15pm. Haven't ridden Atherton but go on YouTube to watch Flow MTB'S REVIEW!

Hmmm interesting, looks like I will be kicking around that area for the month of June as well.

The big question is which bike to bring? The steel hardtail with the 140mm fork or the 160mm fully?

Dually, no question... While we maintain the heck out of the trails, they are far from groomed bike park trails...Davies Creek would be fine on the hardtail, everything else, unless you are an out and out racer or diehard hardtail fan, you'll find the dually better. And a six inch bike will open up some Kuranda DH shuttles and even the Nationals DH.

We're definitely bringing our duallies. 1 month to go...

Just to clarify, there is no Big 4 at Smithfield. nearest caravan parks are Palm Cove or Caravonica. Cool Waters Caravan Park Brinsmead is about the same distance. All are probably a good 20min ride, (5 by car) to Smithfield trailhead. Atherton Big 4 is awesome, really looks after MTB crew...but Atherton is about 1hr by car from Smithfield. Trinity Beach is the nearest suburb with lots of holiday accom. Yorkeys Knob has a fair amount too, and is probably a 15minute ride to the trails.

For your bearings if you are googling stuff, the trailhead is off McGregor Road, next to JCU (James Cook Uni)... We have a bunch of local tour operators ( at least 3 and a specialist ladies coach) who service everything from unique XC rides to secluded swimming holes ( without crocs) to DH shuttles... And can even hook you up with DH bikes and gear. Have a blast when you get here.

Great info! Thanks bud. So with your knowledge would you base at Atherton or near Smithfield? Which the better overall experience looking as we'd like to take it a few of the sites while in Cairns?

Do some googling...depends on what else you want to do. We've lived in Cairns for 10 years and recently spent a week at Atherton, and had a ball...went to Mareeba drive-in, Malanda cinema (oldest in Qld), Yungaburra Markets, Milla milla falls, innot springs (hot springs)...etc etc etc,.. There is tons to do up there if you want, and about 60kms of green and blue trails with a bit of black descents... Hills, scrubby bush, little bit of rainforest, views and soils from white granite sands to red then black clays, and rocks...lots of rocks. then 30 minutes away is Davies Creek, another 30kms + of green and blue gravelly trails, more wide open spaces and fire roads, in savannah bush (eucalyptus scrub)

Now if your are doing the usual tourist stuff, the reef, the zoos, Kuranda rail/sky rail, AJ Hackets Bungy, white water rafting, eating out heaps, Daintree, Mosman Gorge, Paronella park, Mission beach - then you'll want to be based in Cairns. And you are close to 30-40kms of trails, little bit of green, lots of blue and plenty of double black both climbing and descending...and riding in proper rainforest to tall eucalyptus Forrest and even pines.

If you have the money and a spare night, a night on Green Island is pretty cool...once the last ferry leaves at 4.30, only guests on the island until about 9.30 next day...haggle for a price, but a room for 2 with breaky is going to be $350-$400. Plan on being there all day for the best part of 2 days. As a guest, everything is included - glass bottom boat, use if resort even after checking out, they store your bags and have showers and towels for use right before you leave, snorkelling is awesome, surf ski's etc...

So hope that helps a bit... PM me or TastyDirt if you want, Bill used to be in tourism up here and might have good contacts or tips.

Plenty of food for thought there. Thanks mate. I like the idea of basing at Atherton myself. A good mix of everything there. My lovely lady has organised a dive for me while there too. Going to be a great trip
