Groupset question...

I currently have a Giant Talon 1 29er, and while the gears shift "fine", the actuation is rather casual. Is this due to the lower spec groupset X5 SRAM, or just a MTB querk? Will a top o the line f/d and r/d solve this?

Thanks in advance.

Tried running some new cables and housings and giving them a good adjustment? Whilst top of the line components may help a little, i'd be amazed if you can't get the current gear working well.

Also, how old are the chain and cassette?

Brand spanking new.

Bike was bought from a "high volume" Giant dealer. So I am now cursing myself for not going to a specialist shop.

I'd say it's the X5 stuff. I've found it to be a bit on the vague side. Higher-spec shifters will make more of a difference to the feel than derailleurs, just make sure they match the number of gears.

Better still, bin it & replace with Shimano.
