GT i-Drive frame bearings CARBON frame

I know this has been covered to death online for aluminium frames but can't find anything specific to carbon frames.
Due to a sudden and alarming amount of movement in the rear triangle I got a new set of headset bearings and pulled the frame apart.
Instead of a plain metal washer holding the rubber o-ring seal in place as per the new bearings, there's a plastic tapered washer instead.
I assume this is so the precious carbon frame doesn't get worn away in preference to the washer.
Anyone done this and shed any light on it?
I'm about to look into getting replacement plastic washers as the old bearings seem to be every bit as good as the new ones, so assume the movement is due to these plastic washers being worn out.
Thoughts?
