Just curious, do you have a training plan written out, in your head, etc or are you just randomly going out and riding?
Wife has a coach who has set out a training plan for her to follow. Makes her very accountable. Thus, even when there are days when she "doesn't feel like it", she still goes out because the program says she has to. Total ride time a month averages out to be around 40 hours so no need to do massive hours on the bike.
The program has certainly made her quicker. Whilst it is geared towards mountain bikers, she has found she is also quicker on the road bike when she (occasionally) races.
