Help me help this dog

So the story goes, I'm currently in remote NT. I've got a solid running partner who has just had a couple of puppies.photo.JPG

However as the pics will show, the poor little guy is suffering a fair bit.

I've spent the last 3 hours pulling these motherfuckers out of it's ears. I've honestly never seen anything so fucked up on a dog like this.

Now let me just say that these are not my dogs but they are currently living under my house. Also where I am living means no vets and I'm not exactly able to go to the local pet shop and get some 'anti tick' shampoo or lotion nor do I have a gun to put it out of its' misery. I just want to make its existence comfortable. Have any of you farkers / burners got some home remidies for getting rid of these bastards (I'm assuming they are just standard ticks as the little guy is still able to run around ok)? Otherwise I'll just have to keep on tweezing away.

Thanks for your help and I'll put up some other pics if it gets any better!

They don't look like standard ticks to me. Pick what you can find, give them a wash and keep them inside?

I've never tried I for ticks, but for calf lice we use tea tree oil. Just dilute it, spray it on, rub it in which may be hard in this situation. Probs worth a try just dowsing him with it

That poor mut, you probably already read this but if not : http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080116163917AAHFxJO

Seems that technique is key though. Good on you for caring and I hope it all ends well :)
Ta, have had a look at that. Figured i needed some technique for my 10minute of veterinary skills before I attacked the little guy

I gave them a solid lashing last night and must've picked off a couple of hundred. It's entire ear was covered, that picture was after clearing half of them. I definitely wouldn't let these things inside my little 5mx10m tin box. No idea what other diseases / lice they could be carrying.

Thanks man, I'll have to give that a go and see how it goes.

Anywhere else you can keep em, even knock up a small fence with some wire or something, if they are living under your house there is a chance there is a lot more under your house or at least may be a source. On that note might be worth checking that out for your sake.

I know we used to just metho them when we got one on us, I don't think covering a dog in metho is really ideal though obviously aha, I have heard tea tree works so definitely give that a good old try and lash it on there as suggested above.

You could give vinegar a go diluted 50 50 with water. Wipe it all around in his ear hopefully the critters won't like it. Though if he has a lot of broken skin it might sting a bit.
See this. http://www.dailypuppy.com/articles/how-to-clean-a-dogs-ears-with-vinegar-and-water_1469.html

Just be careful where it says to put drop in the ear, it must only be a few drops, dogs can't get water out of their ear like we can, it can get stuck in there and cause more problems.

Ideally go here and post your question with the pics you will get advice from a vet. I think You do have to offer a few bucks that you award if and when you are satisfied with an answer but you will get good professional help there and find out if it is something that can be treated http://www.justanswer.com/sip/veterinary?r=ppc|ga|1|Pets|Veterinarian - 1

Do you have any contacts within any aboriginal communities? They may have come across the work of AMRRIC? If so - they may have access to injectable doramectin.

I've just asked my Dad, he's been a RAAF dog handler for 18 years, and this is what he has had to say

"There is no home remedy for ticks, the viniger solution does not work. Pull them all of, and put them in a tin/jar with bleach. Then get on the vet shed, and order a tick collar and some frontline"

You can have it delivered, but you have to get the correct dossage for the pups weight. Here is a link for the Frontline: http://www.thevetshed.com.au/?rf=kw&kw=frontline

He's not a vet, but has worked around dogs for his whole life. Just his 2c

We just pull them off, grandma sometimes gets a rag and puts a bit of diluted metho on a rag and wipes it on the ticks.

I've heard, from grandma, that sometimes when you pull them off they can inject poison. So if you pull to many off at once without killing them first, it can be bad for the dog. Not sure the truth in that though.

How did you go with the little guy?

Yes it's true that there's a certain technique to getting ticks off, and it's important not to squeeze them as you're pulling them off. Wrong side of Australia to be paralysis ticks, but you still don't want them to inject whatever they've got into the pup's bloodstream.

If you haven't yet, contact a rescue, even RSPCA. They should be happy to help you. They can also take the dogs in, care for & socialise them and rehome them.

Good luck! Keep us updated. :)

Thanks man, I think those guys came out here about 2 months ago. I'm not sure when they are back. Will get them to have a look if the little guy is still alive.

If I get anywhere near a vet I'll pick it up. But getting anything delivered here is a nightmare. Can take up to 4 weeks, if it even gets delivered out here

I've heard similar. But i think they start injecting it as well when they've been on for more than 24hrs. It's been a day since I pulled most of them off and he's still getting around. So I'm assuming he's alright.

He's still alive. I'd say that it's bloodstream is already filled with whatever toxins these parasites carry. RSPCA is more than 18 hours away so no chance of that happening. I'm going to try and get a few more off it tonight. If he can survive the next 2-3 weeks I think he should be fine!

THIS. Also there are probably nests around your place that you want to clear out. I'm in remote SA myself, not far from the NT, and we burn the low lying scrub around our houses pretty regularly. The tick thing needs to be kept on top of or those pups will be in danger. Are these camp dogs? if so they may have good natural immunity.
Good luck its a big job.

Yeah, I'm sure there a few nests under the house. But I'm not crawling around on my gut in +40'C to get them! I don't get paid enough as it is haha! And yes it is a camp dog, most of them seem to have a bit of a tick problem anyway so unless the whole town is cleared they'll keep coming back I figured. I'm just sticking with the tweezers atm.

Oh man, I forgot to add the link I was gonna give you.

Anyway here's a list of rescues, maybe there's one near you?

Great to hear he's doing alright, you're doing a fantastic job taking care of him. Puppies are tough little buggers.
Like I mentioned before I am very very remote. There's nothing of the sort nearby. The closest might be Katherine but with the state of the road out of town it's about 10 hours away. And that's even if the road is still open. Haven't had a chance to have a look for the last week or so.
