Having spent 1000's of hours in the ocean around WA surfing and bodyboarding I think the sharks still have right of way and we are really only dropping in on them.

Human's are acting in a natural way. Every animal (including human)'s basic instinct is survival, we aren't doing anything the shark isn't doing, Man poses possible threat to shark, shark attacks. Shark poses possible threat to man, man attacks. Human beings are the number one predator on this earth.
I did expand on the fact as humans we have more reasoning than these animals, we have the higher ability to choose a better method of shark control, we understand them, they dont understand us.. We are the most dangerous creature but we have choice, animals don't know any better in those situations.

No no no!

Didn't you read a few pages back? Those from the west who have to live with the issue are supposed to be for the cull and us in the east, in the safety of our comfortable armchairs are supposed to be against it.

Do you not understand how the silly little clichéd generalisation works?

The thing about generalisations is that they are generally true.

Now did any off these sharks have freaken lasers?

Regardless of the morality of a shark hunt, there remains the fact that humans are shit when it comes to tracking and identifying the shark responsible.

What we need to do is train up a loyal specialist bounty hunter shark that can track and kill any sharks that are crossing the line and attacking humans. He (or she) would be a bit like Blade but presumably without the need for sunglasses.

Would you take your kids to the beach and not let them go for a swim?
How is the beach any different to any other place? It's all about risk management. If you are really worried by the dangers that the ocean poses to your kids, don't take them to a beach that worries you. Take them to a pool/waterpark/bathtub and let them have at it; it's not as though sharks are the only danger at the beach anyway.

Plenty of parents let their kids ride bikes on the quiet culdesacs in the 'burbs, but would probably draw the line at letting them pedal around on a six-lane highway; it's a matter of reasonable risk.

I have no problem with trying to make kids as safe as reasonably possible, but trying to sanitise the entire world just so parents don't actually have to worry about saying 'no' to their kids is pretty damn selfish.

Whatever cunts, fish fingers for all I say !

They cull dingos on Fraser after a kid gets mauled and if a snake was in your yard wouldn't you grab a shovel, a pit bull bites a kid in the street while hes riding his bike and it gets put down is that not of the same mentality or do we only give a toss about loving a big good for fuckall fish with big teeth that likes chowing down on seals and the occasional human ?

Im of the hunt gather fuck and fight mentality and thats fine by me, what a bunch of lycra wearing tree hugging sooks !

Majority of posters on here wouldn't go to the beach for fear of getting sand in there vaginas so what do you care about a few sharks being caught and strung up at a local wharf to appease a few villagers, its Australia its what we do get over it !

I also catch and release by the way ;)

And with that load of childish bullshit we say goodbye to rb baby or a few days, hopefully he can refrain from calling people cunts and arguing like a 12 year old when he gets back. Fiesty disagreement is fine but crap like that ^^^ only leads to name calling and space wasting.

The dingo cull is the only example there that is at all similar, and I can't say that's something I like the principle of that either.

Your other examples are totally different however, because they're all in a domestic environment. I grew up on a property adjoining heavy bushland and snakes were just something that was around. Used to see plenty of tree snakes, and whenever possible we'd call a bloke who lived up the road and was a licensed keeper. He'd come catch them and release them elsewhere. I remember my Mum using the shovel on a little brown snake, but it had found its way inside the garage, and was posing an immediate threat. That's a very different situation to taking the shovel on a bushwalk and killing whatever snakes you can find because you're worried that one day they 'might' be a threat.

As for the pitbull, not only is that in a domestic environment, but it's meant to be a domestic animal. More to the point, when they put those dogs down, they're disposing of the actual animal that has proven to be a danger. It's not people walking down the street with rifles, popping any large dog they see sitting in its yard 'just in case'.

For the record, I'd be all up for strictly licensed fishing for Great Whites if you could actually eat the buggers. I have no morality whatsoever when it comes to what goes on my dinner plate!

Dolphins are our friends, they have proven it time and again. I don't know about you but flipper was my super hero!

Flip teamed with Skip, Man.... Bad arsed combo right there, Jaws would have no hope.

Friends who murder defenceless porpoises for fun and attempt sexual assault on daft tourists gullible enough to spend $150 to swim with them.

Collectively if dolphins were a person they'd be Ted Bundy

Funnily enough, I'm watching the latest QI and I have just learned that Killer Whales (with emphasis on the 'Killer' part) are not actually whales. They are a hell of a lot more closely related to dolphins.

That explains a lot.

I guess it's only a matter of time before a long lost ancestral genetic connection between dolphins and South Australians is discovered

Well that escalated quickly.

Something I've touched on which most have seemingly ignored is that an estimated 11,000 sharks are killed every hour, most of which are killed by the shark finning trade. Aside from being a barbaric practice (for those that have been living under a rock they cut the fins off the shark and dump the rest of the animal back in the water, usually while they are still alive) most of the sharks they kill are fairly harmless to humans. Why is it that people conveniently ignore that but come close to starting a riot when someone suggests a catch and kill order? If a catch and kill order were to go ahead how many sharks do you seriously think would be killed? I'd guess no more than a dozen, which compared to what is happening in Asia is nothing. A couple of sharks removed to make an area a bit safer is fine by me. I don't condone this in any of the other states but the situation in Southern WA is a bit different.

If you are seriously passionate about this then do something about it. I for one get newsletters from most of the major shark conservation groups which means I get most petitions that come through and I sign nearly all of them. Where possible I fly with airlines that have banned shark fin from their cargo and I won't eat anywhere with shark fin on the menu. Sure my actions alone won't change the world but the more people who get in on it the bigger the difference we can make.

Anyway, on a more upbeat note I've just spent the last week diving in Port Stephens. Pretty rad, little different to the tropical stuff I'm used to. I did however find one of the coolest places on earth, the Shark and Ray centre. Bloody awesome experience and I can't wait to go back.
