Ok Finally work has begun on the Pony Express DH trail. Skinny Mal and the Pants Optional BARM crew have been putting in some big afternoons to get things started.
Thought I'd share a few photos here with a bit of a description of what we are doing and why
It's a start
The trail starts down a nice fast section, couple of easy off camber corners then this corner swings up in a grade reversal. This creates a natural waterbar but introduces water flow across the trail in the braking zone.
Red line is roughly the riding line. Blue lines are the natural drainage
Me little digger, Tallis looking on and helping out
"A" is a drainage gutter to be filled with rocks this then stops cross flow water running across the trail in the braking and turning zone and bring it off into the drain spot made by the grade reversal.
"B" will be a berm filled with the dirt dug from the gutter.
The back side of the berm is to be "armoured" by the logs and rocks and will help keep the drainage up out of the corner
Filling the gutter with rocks
Packing in the berm
Finished product. "A" is a rock armoured scallop to allow the water to drain off. Importantly the rocks are raised a bit to help slow the water down and disperse it a bit then a "dam" of leaf litter and bark acts as a sediment trap.
