Maps for GPS's

I just got a Garmin 810 Edge and bought the performance bundle which they say comes with maps. It does one base map that's it. No problem just log onto Garmin pay another $199 and you can have the out dated Sensis maps. Or you can pay $39 a year for Satellite maps. I am not real happy with those solutions as I have paid $600 for essentially a Garmin 510 unless I pay for more maps.

Some googling found this

http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

http://www.osmaustralia.org/index.php

Both sites make maps available for free for many GPS units which apparently in a lot of cases are more up to date than the Garmin offerings.

I have downloaded but not installed them yet to check them out will report back.

If any one else knows of any other viable solutions to not paying an arm and a leg I will add them.

I got the 810 performance bundle 12 months ago and it came with the maps on an SD card. I find them OK but the maps on the garmin site are different so routes off-road don't really work. Strava is good for creating routes using the heat map though.

Shonkymaops

You could try Shonkymaps. I use it on my eTrex30, with 5m contours, and it works pretty well. Not sure if you could load it onto an 810, but I can't see why not.

Except phones are in the same boat. If you phone has a proper GPS you still need mapping software if you are out of reception range no google maps. Phones also have a lower class of GPS unit in them compared to most newer dedicated GPS. I also use Cadence and Speed and HRM on the ANT+

Shonkymaps pretty much uses http://www.osmaustralia.org/index.php to get its mapping. Shonkymaps has the files linked as well but the news section hadn't been updated since 2009ish so wasn't sure on how updated links are.

I am looking into a mapping GPS too, looking at this

http://www.wildfiresports.com.au/garmin-edge-810-mapping-only-bundle-aus-nz-topo-ma

they also have the topo maps card for $130
At this stage after looking at the free offerings I wouldn't pay for maps. The paid maps are usually behind the times by the time you get them. These maps are all compiled from free resources by people that felt the price most companies charge is outrageous. I have a Subaru Impreza with Sat Nav Bought new in 2013 the maps are from 2009 and will cost me $300 for Subaru to update.

Just in case someone else is thinking about using their phone for mapping. You can buy an app called motionx that you can download free maps for (open cycle ) and run off memory - no need for mobile service, and there are various sites for building up tracks to follow .

Further if you have iphone or galaxy, get a bike mount from quadlock - I have never dropped a phone off their holder.

I use my phone with an app called viewranger, sounds very similar.

Main problems from my point of view are battery life ( phones chew through power with GPS constantly running), and robustness in case of a crash. I am constantly on the hunt for a cheap Garmin Etrex 20 to solve all my problems. Run on AA batteries.

Opencyclemap is just fucking brilliant. Use it on the laptop at home for route mapping, or just scoping out what riding is around when you are travelling to somewhere new.

I got this a while ago for my old 60cx
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Garmin-Australia-New-Zealand-2013-V4-Topo-Map-Micro-SD-SD-V4-FREE-POST-/121527621414?pt=AU_Electronics_GPS&hash=item1c4b9c5726
Only 20m contours rather than the 5m for the $150 packages but not bad for $30 ( I paid $20 but is gone up a bit)

Otherwise i mostly use Avenza PDF maps on my phone- have every 1:25K topo for NSW on a micro sd card (6.3GB) and its great. Modern GPS in my Note 3 is every bit as good as my older stand along GPS.
