Marzzochi 66 on a DH bike

Hey peoples hope we are doing well.
Well, at the moment i'm looking for a set of dual crown forks for my 04Giant dh comp. We all know the marzocchi 66 boosts 170mm of travel and is a single crown fork, the fork that came stock on the dh comp had 170mm travel.
So my question is, would you suggest/recommend running the 66 on a dh bike?
Take into account that i'm not a full on dh racer, u'd probably consider me a newbie dher.
Opinions please.

There really isnt an advantage. It weights the same amount as a DH fork, is the same height as a DH fork, but is not as stiff as a DH fork. Just get a DH fork yo. Unless its uber cheap.

its actually lighter then most DH forks (expception probably being the boxxer)

its lighter then a Dorado or 888

haha with a lot of dh forks you cant even turn the bars 75 degrees and a boxxers more like 55 :p

I'd be wary. Sure it'd be nice, but the DH comp head tube was designed for dual crown forks. The different stress loading due to a single crown fork may cause problems. I'm not certain, but maybe someone else could comment on this.

IMO stick with dual crown forks, unless you're prepared to take the risk, or the importer/manufacturer can verify that it's okay.

BTW, if the frame had a 1.5 standard head tube, then I'd say go for it, because frames sporting 1.5 standard head tubes are usually designed for long travel single crown forks.

66 is just an option, i just saw it and thought "hey it would be kewl to have that much travel in a single crown."
i reckon if they were a proven product it would be sweet, but i think i'll steer away from it now. i don't really want such a slack bike

get some new fox forks!!! bling bling!!! nah jks. whatever. they would be sweet forks but sparkman has a point...........as usual. why not just get dc forks. but than again. if these work out cheaper get them!

66's would be great if you want/need to throw in an X-up to your DH run. If it were me, I'd steer clear of a single crown for DH, if there were any advantage to it, I'm sure you'd see a professional using them, which you don't...

Haha so uv converted huh? about time too, 66's on a DH bike would be great, sure theyre not AS stiff as DC's but they come pretty close and will feel better. but it really depends on how hard u treat ur forks and the manner of DH u ride

I don't think that argument holds up very well, pro's are sponsored, thus their component choice is generally dictated by who is paying them what. There's enough amature riders who've DH'd and whatnot on singlecrown forks to prove thier worthiness. For an outright racer, there may not be any justifiable advantages to run a singlecrown fork, but for recreational use, as well as doing trail riding, there are small advantages here and there. I am thinking that fork companies might be reluctant to have the worlds best riders going hard on their singlecrown forks, it'd possibly ruin their marketing for dual crown forks.

Don't forget that Marzocchi quotes weights sans steerer tube and 20mm axle. This blows the weight out to a much less tasty amount, considering the heft of a steel steerer strong enough to handle what a 66 will dish out to it.

I was going to get one for my new bike, but I've been talked into a Fox DH instead. The 66 is also considerably taller than an 8" Boxxer.

hey i would get 66. it would be one helluva conversation starter at every race + it would look a million bucks. Id put it on my norco in a hartbeat if i got the dough.

Woah there, just hold on a second. A Fox DH on a VP-free..... You can be arrested for possessing such bike porn! :wink: If you steer away from Hope brakes, gothic rotors and Hadley hubs and you might just get away with it. :lol:

I should be right then, coz I'm getting Saint brakes, gothic rotors and a King front hub. :wink:
