Maxxis Ignitor

Just wondering if the Maxxis Ignitor tyres are any good because i was in the process of buying minion DH's when the salesman suggested i buy these. i told him the kind of riding i do (light DH) and he said they're really grippy and are thick enough to withstand DH. So anyone with advice or alternate choices please post!

Thanks

I am sure everyone will have their own opinions, but I would not be confident using them for what you have described.
Will depend on what width and if they are UST or not. Non USt tyres have thin sidewalls.

I ride a trail that has a long scketchy fire road descent, that has a loose, rocky surface. I usually run a 2.1 nevegal and have no problems. One day ran an Ignitor down the same hill, and have never been so scared for my life.

Maybe the salesman was overstocked in Ignitors.

Ignitors are great tyres. I've run predominantly ignitors for a few years now in 2.35 size as an aggressive trail / all mountain / light freeride tyre and them excellent in all but the really dry and loose conditions mentioned above BUT... they are not a downhill tyre. 'Light downhill' ?? If your are playing on downhill tracks with your FR / AM bike then OK but not on a DH bike.

Would suggest 2.35 Highrollers (super tacky) or similar - perhaps dual ply on the back and go single on the front to keep weights down if thats what your worried about.

As everyone has said they won't be that good for downhill. I agree. They will have thinner sidewalls than DH tires. If its light DH with no big rocks or big rock gardens they should be ok but i think you would be better off with DH tires like the maxxis high roller, minion, Kenda nevegal etc...

Your salesman is a dickhead. Ignitor's are in no way aimed at any sort of downhill. You'll have more pinch flats than you ever dreamed of.
For downhill, get Minion's.;) For a bit of all mountain, try some Kenda Nevegal's.

+1 on all points but the nevegals.

Try the Maxxis Advantage. Its designed as a high volume xc tyre. In saying that, I run one on the front of a Enduro in a 2.4, and its a great tyre for "all mountain" types of riding, a little bit draggy for XC, but thats the trade off.

Def worth looking at.

I had them on my Reign and found them to be really grippy and predictable. I've since switched to tubeless Larssen's and they are sweet! Ignitor's on the other hand.................. They are better off fitted to a lower end entry level hardtail.

no way, don't get them.
I had Ignitors on my Trail bike and and got 2 flats on a 5 minute decent. They don't like going fast downhill on rocky loose corners. They have paper thin side walls.

I cant comment on tread pattern but if your looking at riding rocky sections buy a 2 ply side wall tyre. I had 3 pinch flats at Ourimbah and a mate pointed out I was using single ply Minnions that I got for free,I quickly changed to 2 ply and havent had a pinch flat yet.

1+ for Larssons on my specialised enduro.

Hope this helps..
