I know a lot of you guys are used to working off CAD templates but my experience this time is that it is way too inaccurate and I mean the holes aren't even round, no dimensions and the lines are all wonky like a manky hobo chewed them and don't ask about squareness.

Anyway I went old school and redrew it. Need to throw some dimensions on, wait for a sunny day so I don't have to swim to the shed and get stuck in.

Is this something that someone has asked you to make?
Reminds me of this...

An "engineer" at my work recently drew up a drawing for a skid base with vertical brackets/uprights that will be bolted to it.

To "save time", one of the fitters was given a cut list for all the steel and the drawing so he could pre-drill all the mounting points and bolt holes in the brackets/uprights.

Instead of one fixed datum line (like the top of the skid base) to reference every measurement from the datum was the centre of an imaginary clearance hole in a small bracket that needs to be welded onto the base.

Please tell me you got the "engineer" out to the workshop and gave him the tape measure. just hook it on an pull sunshine.

As an engineer, (and a boilermaker) I have seen my fair share of engineers create some "interesting" designs. The best engineers have a good solid practical background. There's a hell of a lot out there that have just been to Uni and never touched a spanner, laid a weld or disassembled anything.

The fresh out of uni ones that think they know everything are my favourite...
You can try to steer them in the right direction, but sometimes you just need to let them fuck up a few times before they realise that hey, this guy that has been installing process pipework and equipment for 20years might actually have a clue...

A good one a while ago was a tank that got put in 20mm out of position by the guys who made /installed it... When the first pipe was made to the drawing and it was short and some head scratching was happening I got my dumpy out and confirmed the tank was wrong... Grabbed the engineer, and suggested lengthening the pipe 20mm as a quick easy fix, nope...that would upset the universe...The solution was to move the rest of the bracketry and equipment towards the tank...which was already in position..

Whilst I get it, as an extra 20mm of pipe will hold extra volume and might upset the process...it was just a rinse water tank which went through a flowmeter anyway...

I'm kind of on both sides, which is a good thing most of the time.
The tradies I work with know I was a boilermaker so I get respect from them and the engineers I work with know I have a good grasp of the practical application so I acknowledged for that. I even get the "bloody engineers" comment on a job with a follow up of " but you're not one of them" :p

It goes both ways, there's some good engineering work, with perfectly good drawings, only to have some tradie fuck it up because I couldn't/didn't read the print.

I am an engineer. I've had my fair share of whacks for making mistakes. Always best to have a good relationship with the trades people - make their job no harder than absolutely necessary. When it all goes to poo they are the ones you have to ask nicely to fix it.

Our old factory manager used to say if we screw it up you'll never know about it. If you screw it up everyone will know about it.

Absolutely right there! As the start of the product line, everything an engineer does affects someone further down the chain.
Good and bad work gets done by anyone, unless you are talking about marketing, none of those guys have a clue. ;)

Everyone should try to know as much as they can about every aspect of the "job" even though everyone on the team is a specialist in a particular field. Makes it so much easier to get a good results.

Its terrible when team work turns into a blame game with empire building and demarcation disputes thrown in for good measure.

Fml I hate life atm. Two more years to finish sparky apprenticeship and I’m fucking outta here! 11yrs served so far and it’s been pretty good, 6months of shit and I’m ready to nuke any and all bridges hahaha. Nepotism and arsehats made of teflon ruin all things.

I really want one of these. Would’ve been super handy to hold that bloody power valve I was cleaning last night.
Probably not actually cause it would’ve left some gnarly marks but still, cool to use.

If someone doesn't take responsibility for their own mistakes it can never be rectified from happening again, and that's how the blame games start in many workplaces. Good workers leave or lose their jobs for no good reason, so some grub can cover their tracks.

Fucking
Aye.

Got off the phone earlier today having to give a really good apprentice a reference. Smart, honest kid who had that knack for handsy stuff but got burnt from vindictive management and penny pinching bullshit. Who tf rips off super from an apprentice? The kids owed $5k plus interest. The relevant authority’s gonna get involved when he hands in resignation, he’s just waiting to get accepted.

It's sad when companies rip off underpaid workers, seen a fair bit of it myself.

You can buy a few types out there these days. Haven't seen anything to the quality of those old ones.

Same here, I had it happen to me as an apprentice, boss closed up shop moved interstate, more $ than it was worth to start chasing a folded business for super ( I was pretty poor at that stage and very uninformed). 3 years of 'super' and the Master Builders/Tafe did nothing to help apprentices be money smart and actually check out your super vs your payslip, was more about quoting and doing the work rather than looking after your own self. I see a lot of others who were in the same boat (Canberra is a small place) and now we are all mostly out of the trade and into other professions. Valuable lesson that I wouldn't wish on anyone especially in today's climate.

Bracket is done but I won't share since that was part of the contract. Just as well, the beautifully milled finish got marred in the machine vice and I may have dropped it when the belt grinder caused delta T that was more than I could cope with. So I put a buffing wheel in the drill and now it just looks like burnished pooh. It is getting painted, apparently. Good news it looks nothing like the cad template or the drawing.
