Fire progresses across southern ski runs
11 January 2007
11:45am – The fires on the southern slopes of Mt Buller continued to burn last night, progressing across more of the ski run area.
In the last 24 hours, fires have moved in an easterly direction from Fanny’s Finish, across Howqua and Family Run. From there, it moved down the mountain to Zwier’s Zig Zag, across to Outer Edge and onwards to the bottom of Wombat.
From Wombat, fire continued in a southerly direction, moving aggressively up Little Mt Buller mountain (not the run). It then came back down the mountain and is now progressing down the valley and into Federation ski run.
It is believed that the fire at Federation will continue to move in an easterly direction today and is likely to join with fires that are now occurring in the Corn Hill Road/Quarry area.
Although fire was particularly active in the ski run area, all ski-infrastructure remains untouched by fire. The chairlifts in the fire affected region, particularly Wombat Chairlift between the bottom and mid-station, have been kept running to protect the lift cables and snow guns are being used to further protect assets and vegetation.
Fires came close to Kofler’s Restaurant (across the grass) and near Wombat Kiosk but both commercial operations are untouched and appear to be out of danger.
As a result of the fire activity on the southern slopes, a road block has been put in place at the Arlberg Hotel to prevent general traffic from accessing the upper parts of the Resort. Only emergency vehicles can use this road.
While the Mt Buller Tourist Road is currently open, Resort Management advises against travel into the Resort due to fire danger and the number of emergency vehicles using this road. Please be aware that this road may by closed to all upwards and downwards moving traffic at very short notice by VicRoads. Anyone located in the Village at that time will be forced to remain there until the fire threat has passed.
Anyone entering the Village to protect their property should proceed with caution and register their presence at the Mt Buller CFA.
Residents have been warned to remain vigilant even though the Mt Buller Village remains untouched by fire. Resort Management advises residents and workers to again place bins full of water and mops and buckets outside of their properties to prepare for any ember attack that may eventuate today.
A community meeting will be held at 5:00pm at the Mt Buller Chalet to advise all people located on-mountain about the latest fire developments.
