MTB Use Stats - Any Help Greatly Appreciated

Hi All,

Can anyone out there point me in the direction of MTB use stats for NSW/Australia?

Background is that after the recent meeting on the oxford falls trails issue, the local State member has undertaken to question the relevant Minister on the lack of legal MTB trails in NSW given the popularity of the sport. Part of this is demonstrating that the MTB user group has increased significantly in recent years (hence the need for stats to back up this assertion) whilst the number of available trails is decreasing.

To date I haven't been able to find any meaningful data. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Cycling Promotion Fund states, "... a record 1.47 million bicycles
sold in 2007... Cycling has become the 4th most popular physical
activity with more than 1.6 million Australian adults cycling in 2006,
an increase of 17% from 2001." Further more, Retail Cycle Traders
Australia statistics show that 1998-2005 70% of all bike
sales were mountain bikes.

You might also talk to CORC about usage in Canberra. I know it's not NSW, but the club is particularly strong and they've recently gone through the impress-the-government process, resulting in Stromlo Forest Park and govt. backing of the World Champs bid. There oughta be some numbers in there somewhere.
