New Enterprise Incentive Scheme

Just wondering if anyone on Farkin has done this course?

http://www.nna.asn.au/NEIS.htm

Its basically a government scheme to help people with new business ideas make them successful. You get the equivalent of New Start allowance for 12 months whilst your business gets off the ground plus all sorts of training and mentoring along the way.

I'm going to a seminar for applicants next week, but I'm not sure if I can apply since I'm still finishing my degree (last semester now) and not on New Start...

Yup i did the program and opened ~:serum:~ in march this year.

You will need to be receiving government benefits to be accepted, but there is no length of time you have to be on benefits before applying.
I can't imagine i would have launched my business in the short period of time i did without NEIS.

If you have any questions about it, i'll be able to answer them :)

So let me get this right?
You have to be already getting money off the goverment in order to get more?

No offence but thats bullshit. I'm working my arse off part time (30+hrs a week) for peanuts while trying to start a business. Wheres the help for someone like me?

yeh i was keen for this, but I refuse to go on the dole.

I couldnt believe that they wouldnt even let me do the course if I had a job. I dont understand how someone on the dole can even start a business, let alone have the ambition to do it.
But anyway...

Its basically a government scheme to reduce the amount of long term people relying on them for the dole, from what I can gather... As opposed to a government initiative to help creative and ambitious entrepreneurs start their business without having to go on the dole...

Good to see an example of someone starting a successful business from it though Lollies! One of the questions I was going to ask was how long do you have to be on the dole to get accepted, but you've answered that already. So I'll just have to get accepted onto New Start after my degree, then apply for this scheme...? How hard is it to get onto New Start - even if only for a week? A mate of mine graduated from an industrial design degree and said its easy to stay on New Start if you say you are looking for "creative" jobs - because the government has hardly any available? ie; they dont expect you to go for 10 jobs every 2 weeks (or whatever it is) because they know thats not realistic in "your field"?

Hmm ok. But as already said- how many long term people on the Dole actually have the ambition required to start a business? Its people with the drive to make something work who should be getting a hand.

I'm probably out of step, where I work I see bikes claimed for travel usage by employment agencies when one of their members gets a job only to be hocked a week later. So I see in real time the goverment getting ripped.

The point is if you have a job you can afford to educate yourself in starting a business and supporting yourself while you get it off the ground.
Is there a particular reason you refuse to go receive government benefits?? a bit too much better than anyone that has the occasional issue with their work situation??

DO NOT belittle government assistance recipients, you are not any smarter or more ambitious than what they are.

All of the products are designed, produced and printed by various brands. I've not yet started to produce my own designs but that is an eventual plan.. at the moment i'm importing and reselling similar styles to my own designs to get the name out there.
At this stage the business is providing me with education you can't learn from a book and it will likely change a great deal in good time.

The site is great and you have some sweet 'product'!! (Man i hate that word!!!) ;)
Hopefully you have some retail outlets willing to stock your stuff as well, that would help kick things along.
I wish you all the best in your business venture! :)

One day i might even get my own thing started again properly, was a bit half arsed in actually doing the work. Screen printing can be soooo frustrating!!!
But i did make alot of t-shirts though, am proud of that.

I think you have misunderstood me lollie, I'm not saying that people on the dole don't deserve the help needed to make a business work. I was mearly stating thats there's no assistance for other people starting out, sure you might have a job and some funding (limmited). But without access to decent training most business ventures go belly up. Money lost is ones own hard earned. Not the goverments

So Lollie, I'm interested in how you got accepted into the NEIS... It says you have to prove your business idea has either no competition, or a big demand..

How did you "prove" either or both of those with your business? I guess its just a matter of framing your case in the way they want to hear, and using market statistics to backup your business plan?

It may be something along the lines of "if you can talk us into believing that your idea is worthwhile, you can probably talk others into buying your stuff"?

Disclaimer: I have no experience whatsoever with this.

To get accepted you have to complete the first module of the business management certificate which is the outline of your eventual business plan.
The amount of debt you have and finances for the venture comes into consideration and there's an amount of research involved aswell.

Theres no talking them into accepting you into the program, there must be indisputable evidence that your idea has the capacity to be a successful business if managed correctly.
My business plan was based on specific statistics and surveyance.

In NSW, TAFE offer a small business course. About $300 a year, 3 hours a night X2 a week and they have all manner of specialists (Taxation, marketing, negotiation etc) come in to teach. I've done it and recommend that to anyone looking at their own business.

Yup, that's basically the course that NEIS offers.
Certificate IV in Small Business Management.
