Agreed... This is a good example of why we are fucked. Everyone brings their own value set and experience based interpretations to the table. Add in the usual greed and stupidity of humanity and it was probably a non starter to begin with...

They are unnecessary.

And it's about what we do now, now we know better.

I'm never going on another o/s flight. Never. I'm trying to demonstrate to others that they too should be making such changes to their glutenous behavior.

Tell me how else we can make a difference - and don't go down the "get involved in politics" dead end. Any change there would take too long to enact & only a fool would expect a satisfactory outcome anyway.
Now i'm certainly highly uneducated on this whole subject, but a quick google search shows that transportation is 14% of the contribution, compared to 50% combined for Electricity/heat and farming agriculture.

I'm certainly not knocking, at all, your contribution by not flying but transportation is certainly a necessity but like everything could be dramatically reduced with unnecessary travel. business and politicians could just as easily skype meetings instead of travelling, but cutting out holidays etc has a trickle down affect on local economies that would have a worse affect than the minor reduction in greenhouse gasses.

I personally can't see how or why such a small step will have any impact? A huge change is needed at the highest levels and whilst many businesses are now focusing on climate change, its all just a drop in the ocean whilst countries are still reliant upon fossil fuels and politicians are in businesses pockets.

That is what needs to change, we need to convert to wind, solar, electricity and do away with fossil fuels. It's out only hope.

Not emitting 6,000kg of CO2 is not a minor contribution.

Have a look at an average CO2 footprint & see how significant that one flight is.

Everything needs to change, I posted the mandate only a few entries ago.

But discussing flights is a way to make a point.

How about this, instead of placing taxes on to the poor for "breeding", how about we lift them up through higher education and better/fairer employement prospects.

Give people education and meaningful employment and the population growth slows. All that taxes like that will do is keep the poor in poverty, please stop placing more economic burdens on the poor.

We have to stop fighting each other for crumbs. Demand a slice of the cake.
Yep it can't be regressive, I am not for regressive taxes and absolutely don't want to disadvantage the poor. Tied to actual carbon emissions, the rich would pay a fair(ish) share. How to do that? Considering people don't want to do even simple things themselves, or those things are too much sacrifice to what they've come to expect from a happy life, it's not looking good.

There are lots of rich people having four kids because they love kids and big families, education has little to do with breeding in the first world, it's more about aspiration. In the third world yeah, education is key, actual provision of contraception, again massive cultural changes that nobody has the will to make happen.

My poverty stricken neighbours aspire to have more kids because kids make them happy. I don't know that we could educate that out of them or that giving them good employment prospects (they actually have fairly decent ones) would make a difference to how many kids they want.

Actually I was in the process of saying that I travelled a LOT for work and that despite arguing the point I was told to do so. Perhaps 90% of it was unnecessary and could have been done via videoconferencing and I would guess that that was pretty much the case when I talk to people who try and justify their business junkets because their boss makes them do it. I pushed back a lot and canned multiple junkets that me and my staff were invited to. Made me really popular...

...It is 90% bullshit. In case anyone is interested I was the Aus/NZ head of the local division of a multi trillion dollar international company. Thus your pleas and commentary are lost on me.

As for personal travel I have no real limitations and can afford to do what I want. I forwent the opporunity to go to the Belgian GP when free accomodation was offered. I have the same offer next year as well as the same for the British GP. I may do so given there are family matters to attend to at some point but like as not I will forgo that too.

I am also seeing many of my friends and peers travel the globe while they can and before it is fucked without realising that they are assisting in the fucking.

huh? What pleas and commentary? And what has being wealthy got to do with anything? Was it a company focused on emissions reductions, or something with a big footprint of its making useless widgets?

Not sure why the bloke whose entire career has been focused on the environment is needing to defend some work flights to some guys who’s net contribution as far as I can tell is to forgo some flights (offset your race cars?)... You all do your thing, I’ll do mine. I’ve done the sums on what I think is doable and I’m hopeful my time on the planet is a net positive with some of my wins on the board.

Not flying when you're not actually planning to fly in the future (because you don't need to) or could even afford to fly in the first place is not exactly making a positive contribution to reducing one's climate impact.

However, since most of us buy imported bikes and bike parts and many of them come in via air freight, perhaps we should desist buying such paraphernalia? Or at least avoid air freighted components (especially since they are typically transported on specialist freight planes)...

...and that's not going to happen.

Not in the office, but the AC unit in the lounge that I fixed myself a couple of years ago after the tradie said it wasnt fixable is humming along nicely ;)
see how it goes tomorrow once it exceeds its maximum ambient design temperature!
you fixed it your self, must have been an easy job ;)

Clean green Norway, meet dirty foul Straya:

I wonder how green Norway really is, eh?

Wait for the oil exploration to show easy pickings.

Straya - good for minerals & oil & shit & not much else...

Oh, and...

We still happy with not changing our lifestyles?

Don’t forget to share this with your kids:

With you on that one @hifiandmtb - what fuckstick bureaucrat approved that, for the sake of 2,000 "potential" long term jobs. And for more oil FFS - why go looking for more of the stuff we need to stop using?

The equinor approval is not just worrying for the emissions, it’s the risk of accidents. It’s ducking deep water and sketchy weather down there and if there is a leak or blow out a lot of oil will get out. The Spencer Gulf fishing industry is shitting bricks over it...

I noticed the same thing. I am currently writing a (R&D for high-tech manufacturing) grant application; there is basically never any requirement to substantiate claimed jobs created after the fact so long as the work is done on time. Government don't even want to know, I suspect - it's usually politically inconvenient information for both sides of politics.
