Will be a seriously challenging day on the bike, mostly people on cross or mtb and even a few on more touring style rigs with 28s
You've gotta have some evidence of some similar rides to signup, and numbers are limited.
Those are some BIG rides ! Makes me embarrassed to post my rides now...haha. I planned to do this ride yesterday (
http://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/8391599 ) but after a couple of hours the legs just didn`t have it, the Garmin shut down in the middle of nowhere and wouldn't turn back on. Had to do a hard reset on it when I got home and lost all the data. This is the route I ended up doing,
http://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/8400293 .
The first climb up Mt St Leonard was ridiculous. Had to get off and walk for 50m in one spot around a fallen tree. I had planned on going to the very top but at the turnoff I realized how silly that idea was. I'm starting to know how close the lines on the topo map have to be before it's to steep to ride. From there I made my way to Narbathon but as mentioned earlier, the Garmin shut down and there were straight roads where there should have been either split roads or intersections. Acheron way heading south wasn't steep by any account but on a day when the legs were heavy it was more than I was up for. There was no chance of getting up Donna to the lookout s planned so I headed down to the Aquaduct trail. The descent towards Warby down Donna Buang was a nice reprive. From the end of the aquaduct trail it was just a matter of following Don rd back to Healesville. The descent for the last few k's were the perfect way to finish the ride. Wish I had the data for the speed of that descent.
A couple of things I have learnt from doing some bigger rides lately:
1. Google maps is not the most accurate when creating a course that includes logging roads in the middle of nowhere. Thought I was going to have to sleep in the middle of nowhere between Narbathon and Warburton a few weeks ago after a few roads just ended abruptly. I have NO sense of direction and rely on maps all the time.
2. Always let someone know where you are going. No phone reception meant I couldn't let my girlfriend know where I was untill I was back at the van.
3. Carry more water than you think you'll need. Oh, and a small bottle of lube meant I didnt have to put up with a dry chain for the last couple of hours.
I'm inspired to keep upping the level of riding and this thread has no doubt been a great part of that.
