Cheers mate. No CX here. All my longer rides are on the Superfly FS. Don't mind it being a bit slower on the roads if I get to include some rougher stuff on a ride.
Fark it, I'm going to give it a go! :D ... one day.

Thanks to big gags for sending me a GPX file of the Yarra Glenn ride he mentioned. I added an extra little loop to round it off to 100k. Some steep pinches on Captains Creek Rd had me chewing the bars and thumbing for gears that weren't there...haha. The descent along Old Mt Slide Rd was a nice reward. Got a bit loose in a few corners after getting a bit ambitious.
Pizza is going down very well right now !

Great effort Matt!! Glad to hear that you enjoyed the loop!!

If you want an absolute killer finish to that ride then keep going past the cemetery for a km or so then veer to the right onto Breakneck Rd.......you will be doing well if you can get up it without having to get off and walk!!!

Cheers mate ! Challenge accepted ! :)
Check the segment out on Strava - it is 1 km long and goes up 144 metres!!! It took me 12m14s at an average speed of 4.9 km (had to walk for a bit of it) and the KOM is 9m40s at 6.2 km/h!!!!!

You might be OK on a mtb with lower gearing but it was a struggle on the CX with 34/28 as my lowest gear and it was hard to maintain traction on the steepest section.

Cheers,

Gags

Wow ! That's a serious climb. Heading out to do a loop around Warby and Healesville tomorrow. Had planned a more aggressive ride with shorter steeper climbs but the lockout is not working so a longer flatter ride it is. Might hit up Warramate for a short loop on the way home if I have the legs.

I've got something stupid hilly! https://www.registernow.com.au/secure/Register.aspx?E=14947

300 or 400k options, I'm in for the 300k and did the 200k/3100vm warmup rode around gippsland last weekend which was a hoot. http://www.strava.com/activities/219323650

Will be a seriously challenging day on the bike, mostly people on cross or mtb and even a few on more touring style rigs with 28s

You've gotta have some evidence of some similar rides to signup, and numbers are limited.
Hey Ben,
Didn't even know these rides existed...I like the sound of this. I live in the area and have ridden a few of these roads. Will consider the 300 over the next week or so.
I don't have any questions at this stage, but might pm you in the next couple of days
Cheers, Art

Wow! that is crazy! How long would you expect the 300k to take you? Good luck!

Those are some BIG rides ! Makes me embarrassed to post my rides now...haha. I planned to do this ride yesterday ( http://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/8391599 ) but after a couple of hours the legs just didn`t have it, the Garmin shut down in the middle of nowhere and wouldn't turn back on. Had to do a hard reset on it when I got home and lost all the data. This is the route I ended up doing, http://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/8400293 .
The first climb up Mt St Leonard was ridiculous. Had to get off and walk for 50m in one spot around a fallen tree. I had planned on going to the very top but at the turnoff I realized how silly that idea was. I'm starting to know how close the lines on the topo map have to be before it's to steep to ride. From there I made my way to Narbathon but as mentioned earlier, the Garmin shut down and there were straight roads where there should have been either split roads or intersections. Acheron way heading south wasn't steep by any account but on a day when the legs were heavy it was more than I was up for. There was no chance of getting up Donna to the lookout s planned so I headed down to the Aquaduct trail. The descent towards Warby down Donna Buang was a nice reprive. From the end of the aquaduct trail it was just a matter of following Don rd back to Healesville. The descent for the last few k's were the perfect way to finish the ride. Wish I had the data for the speed of that descent.

A couple of things I have learnt from doing some bigger rides lately:
1. Google maps is not the most accurate when creating a course that includes logging roads in the middle of nowhere. Thought I was going to have to sleep in the middle of nowhere between Narbathon and Warburton a few weeks ago after a few roads just ended abruptly. I have NO sense of direction and rely on maps all the time.
2. Always let someone know where you are going. No phone reception meant I couldn't let my girlfriend know where I was untill I was back at the van.
3. Carry more water than you think you'll need. Oh, and a small bottle of lube meant I didnt have to put up with a dry chain for the last couple of hours.

I'm inspired to keep upping the level of riding and this thread has no doubt been a great part of that.

This thread should be renamed to "Masochists post your favourite rides here"...

Sometimes I wonder wtf I'm doing, other days it's a joy and I finish a big ride fresh. The thing that sucks is that you don't know how you're going to feel until half way in or less.

I've noticed some big rides in the middle of knowhere. Can I suggest a rooftop map. Fairly cheap. Put it in a bag. As an old 4WDer I've used them for years and they pretty much every trail track road creek etc on it. Your iPhone can give you coordinates of where you are. Then your never lost.

That's the plan mate. I intend to pick one up shortly. I don't use a backpack when I ride so I might have to roll it up and put it in the seat post for emergencies.

Art, numbers are limited due to not wanting too many ppl out on course to keep track of. 25 entries in total for the 300&400, with around 15 already taken I believe.

There is talk of a shorter 200k loop as well via thompsons dam. But nothing confirmed yet

Time wise, hoping to get it done in under 15hrs total time including stops. That would be fairly cruisey but solid all day pace, it's all self navigated of a cue sheet, so that adds a bit of fun as well.
