Problems pissing while MTBing

While this may be an enlarged prostate issue, it is hard to imagine riding would physically change the prostate size enough to prevent urination. Also it doesn't sound like you are saying you cannot pee JD. It sounds like you want to pee and don't have much there.

If that is the case this may be a subtle version of perineal nerve "palsy". Before you lose sensation on your perineum and scrotum, you could get irritation of the branches to the external sphincter of the bladder neck. That is supplied by the perineal (via pudendal) nerve and while the autonomic nervous system controls the internal bladder sphincter and bladder (detrusor) muscle, the need to pee is a pretty complicated thing and that voluntary muscle feeling that something is leaking may be the cause here.

Also and I hate to say this but this sort of odd symptom complex can be part of an aggressive prostate cancer presentation. One where your PSA blood test and even physical examination may appear better than what is going on. Nerve irritation in the male pelvis deserves respect when a rider can't get comfortable like they always have. See a good doctor and not just a physio.

Be well and get it sorted mate.

thanks RP,

your right - I have the need to pee but the stream is weak and volume small. I believe that the last kidney stone inflamed the tubes and I had an UTI. I had a course of antibiotics at the time.

the palsy makes sense, my gooch goes numb and i feel pressure on the area- sometimes my junk goes numb too. I have really noticed any sight changes in saddle tilt plays a huge part. For instance- my saddle is out of position when I raise or drop my fork. I set it for one position but changing the fork affects the saddle tilt. This is on the HT so I imagine the effect is amplified on a FS bike. I use a Specialized Phenom on the HT- will change it over for a SMP as they do help alot.

I cant find a good doctor in the North East Melb.

JD, can I suggest Andrew Garnham? Very, very good, knows cycling and cyclists, very nice bloke.

been measuring and experimenting

ok a couple of things I have found.

My reach is too long on my HT and the front is too low in relation to my saddle height. I am not as supple as I was back in the day and feel I was too stretch out. Add to this that my saddle is slightly tilted back- not flat all add pressure on the gooch.

Unfortunately the fork steerer has been cut too short and the stem is slammed with no spacers under the stem. To get my front end up abit so that it is closer to the height of my saddle- I need to run a bar (20mm) and stem (+6 degree) with alittle rise. That helps as i am a tall b@stard. Also for sh!ts and giggles I run a 50mm stem with 780mm bars the other day and no pressure or discomfort- becasue I was more upright but this affects reach and the way the bike rides- it is all a compromise.

The key take out here is that I need to ride pain free and without issues. It really makes me consider the size and measurements of the frames I ride. I dont think it is saddle on its own rather a combination of set up factors and the fact that the front is too low. I think an SMP would be ok on a HT but wont work for me on a FS due to the fact that you really need to move around more often.

Levelling my saddle and riding in today gave my no pain or numbness on the gooch and I could feel more pressure on the sit bones- which is ideal.

I will keep working on it and will see a doctor if discomfort persists.

All sounds like common sense. Do you use a dropper post? I like the wide bars and 20mm rise as well and it definitely helps take some pressure off the nether bits.

You ride big frames for your (our) height. I struggle with sizing - if I get the right length TT I need loads of seat post and steerer tube. Bet you will run into the same problems if you go for smaller sizes.

I'm using shorter stems on bigger frames now, which I think is a better compromise than going the other way.

Hey mate how's the trouble going regarding the above discussion, have you seen or spoken to any professionals to help alleviate your symptoms?

My wife is a Pelvic floor / continence physio and when i read through this thread i immediately thought that she would certainly be the right sort of person to help you or get you into the right specialist if needed.

Its way over my head but i do know sometimes people actually have muscles that are actually to tight and this can cause just as many problems as tho's with very weak pelvic floors, its all bery complex down there and again way over my head but just because you arent leaking doesnt mean your pelvic floor isnt effecting you and isnt related to this trouble your having while riding and if your blood tests etc came back ok then i strongly believe seeing a good pelvic floor physio is the next best course of action.

Sing out if you are keen to see her and i will pass on her clinic details.

Travis.

thanks Travis

The problems are still present but not to the same extent. I have done alot with my set up
- lower saddle hieght
- tilt saddle forward- level- found it was tilted back.
- rise bar height with 20mm riser bar
- shorten reach with 20mm shorter stem but add 20mm wider bars
- saddle forward- plum with knee over pedal spindal.
this all helps in being more upright, less stretched forward and putting less pressure on the sensative bits between my nuts and bung hole.
- changed saddle- wider with cut out
- drink more water
- get out of the saddle more often
- changed knicks
- have more $ex- mind over body thing.

I think all that I have done has helping pissing when riding butt I still have an overlying issue- I still have an dull ache in my kidney area which is troubling. need to replace the kidneys when I change my drive train.

Thanks for your comments mate
