Wait for Jetstar to have another nz sale and book.
Forget about fergburger, they're good but no burger is worth 3 hrs in a queue.
Unless you buy a full Fay pass, Don't buy skyline tic by time (eg 4 hrs), but by number of laps. I bought a 4 hr and only got 3 runs, the bike lineup was out of control and they were swamped with pensioners and bus loads of tourists all wanting to go up as well.
Regarding travel insurance, check up with your cc provider. My cc provides very comprehensive coverage for me and my bike for everything except racing, at no extra cost.
Pulling your bike apart? If reinstalling a front wheel, bars and rear mech, fitting pedals and pumping up tyres takes you much more than half an hour I'd be surprised.
Also the beer I'd cheaper and there's many a good drop to be had. Also the supermarket in town ( not the others mentioned) is also pretty cheap to stock up too.
I would absolutely hire a car for a down day and go for a drive. The place is mind blowing.
