RC4 Spring Change

I was wondering if someone could help me with changing my spring?
I've got the shock off the bike and have taken out the spring retainer but the spring won't fit past the spacers at the shock mounting hole.
How do I get these out?
Fox says to use a bolt extractor for each side but it looks like the spacer runs all the way through in one piece and not two pieces like they suggest.
Can I tap them with a hammer or will this ruin the shock?

I wouldn't use a hammer. I've heard of people using a vice and socket bits to press them out. Strange that the width of the reducers will not fit through the spring.

Yes I use the vice and socket method. Well, it's either a socket that fits neatly over the spacer rod, or a piece of pipe
the right size for the job.
