Rick Boyer Leads HMBA Rout at NSW Downhill Championships
Last weekend saw 175 riders converge on Awaba Mountain Bike Park Newcastle, for the 2011 State Downhill Mountain Bike Championships, hosted by Rocky Trail Entertainment. In a dominant display of riding, Rick Boyer has won the Elite Male NSW State Championship, after placing third at the same race at Lithgow last year.
It was an outstanding weekend for HMBA with its riders taking out the top honour in 7 divisions. In the Elite race, Newcastle riders Tim Cox, Regan Arthur and Bruce Moir claimed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions on their home track behind Boyer. With just over 1.5 seconds between first and fourth, the racing on the mountain was fast and furious.
Rick Boyer has had a rollercoaster of a year, winning the first two national series rounds this year, before narrowly being beaten to his first ever national series win after a heart breaking crash in the final turn of the last race. Since then, he won the first round of the NSW State Series at Thredbo last month in the lead up to the Championships at Awaba.
After the race Rick said “I knew there was going to be some tough competition but I was quietly confident of getting a good result with my recent form. The local guys here are super fast and tough to beat on any day. It was great that the weekend went to plan and I’m over the moon to win the State Titles at my local track.”
Not to be outdone Alice Minahan tore shreds off a classy Elite Female field to win her State Championship by almost 10 seconds to her closest rival. In similar fashion Pedr Lapp walked in the Expert Male division by over 17 seconds, and Rick Kehoe blasted his opposition to win the Veteran Male title by almost 9 seconds. Coleen Kehoe won her fourth consecutive State Championship title in the Master Female division, rounding out a great weekend for the Kehoe family. Paul Grimstead showed that the old guys were also flying on the day, winning the Masters Male division by a clear margin.
Jack Moir made an outstanding return to racing after a serious shoulder injury earlier in the season to win the Under 19 Male division. Clearly, Jack is going from strength to strength and showed his class in stepping up to the next age bracket, after winning both the State Series and Championships for Under 17 Men in 2010. A heavy crash in the rock garden during Saturday practice obviously had no ill effects on Jack as he comfortably beat a field of 41 riders to take his title. Jack’s time would have placed him 10th in the Elite Male division.
Also in the Under 19 Male race, Nicholas Bohle placed 3rd and Jake Newell was close behind in 4th - both excellent results for these young men.
In the Sport Male race, four HMBA riders placed in the top 10 positions with Tim Threadgate taking third position and making the podium.
HMBA would like to congratulate all of its riders who competed at the state championships this year, and wish them the very best for the remainder of the 2011 State Series.
