PINT of Stella. mate!
Many, many Scotches
Well, it's Saturday night and I'm drinking and iTunes has been throwing nothing but heart-wrenching ballads and sentimental, emotionally manipulating songs at me as if to taunt me with the innate beauty yet harsh horrific pain that is life.
Or to look at it another way, i've been drinking and I'm feeling in a bit of a mood to share my misery and hopefully bring you all down to my level*
So lets all see those songs that make you either want to bawl your eyes out like a Masterchef contestant who's just stubbed their toe on the cold hard frozen corpse of their dead puppy.
Here's a few to get y'all started:
Tom Waits 'Time': Y'know, sometimes I wish my life were a Tom Waits song. He makes booze-sodden maudling just look and sound so damn glamorous! TBH it was a hard choice picking just one song given he's also got melancholy masterpieces like 'I hope that I don't fall in love with you', 'Downtown train' and'Martha' -to name but a few. I should actually just make an entire thread composing of Tom Waits songs. They aren't all depressing ones either. the man can write some absolute ass-kickers!

The Pogues 'The Band Played Waltzing Mathilda'. If you don't know this cover, or the Eric Bogle original, you should probably consider yourself truly unaustralian!

Moby 'God Moving Over The Face Of The Water': If you've ever seen the film 'Heat' You will know this song. If you haven't seen 'Heat', what the fuck are you doing wasting your time on here!? Go watch it now! Go on. do it!

Johnny Cash's cover version of NIN's 'Hurt. The video was filmed around the same time that his long-time wife, partner and soul-mate June Carter passed away. JC himself followed soon after. I defy anybody to watch this and get a lump in their throat

*the irony is I actually got laid last night for the first time since splitting up with the missus after one of the best, most epic nights out I've had in a long, long time. I've really no right to be a miserable bastard right now but Shuffle keeps throwing up haunting ballads at me and some of them are just too damn good not to share. Enjoy! ;-)
