Hi guys, having dramas getting a S4 phone to automatically store on the SD card instead of device. I have tried the settings and a couple of internet guru fixes but no joy. I have no computer access to download my music_/movies to. Is there some backdoor way to get this fooker to work. Cheers for any help, limey

If you are running Android lollipop (5.0+) they have changed permissions and only the Samsung apps can write to the sd card. This is an android issue.

Only way around it is to root the device and change permissions. Or you can long road it and use my files to transfer from phone to sd card.

Fark me, is there any logical reason why they would do that, the zte that I am using( $40 )does all this easily. Please don't make me go the apple way:evil::evil:

Google discovered in allowing read write access it gave permission for possible hacking etc so to close the loophole was a blanket ban.

Part of the reason phones on android are going away from expandable memory.

I am no tekno nerd but this has got to cost them in sales, I love the ability to stick shit on a card. I have a habit of breaking phones so the card is bloody important to me

Bottom post here help at all? https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/play/50dB-31Qw1w

Seems more like something Apple would do rather than Google, hell even a Windows phone lets you do that easily.
no luck on that either, you are right though as Apple are normally the type to do this. The reason I have this android phone is because they should be a breeze to use. I guess I shall have to flog it of to some unaware sucker and get a htc or something, free porn and music included. All I can say is FUCK YOU SAMSUNG. To quote one bloke on rotorburn " your dead to me"

It's not a Samsung issue.

The problem is due to the FAT file system used on sd cards which has no security capabilities. This means any app can manipulate data on the sd card which does not belong to that app.

FAT is currently popular as many operating systems can read and write to it so you can take an SD card out if your camera and your computer will be able to read it.

The issue has been around since the 80's with the FAT file system, I guess Google took a stance to change this on their Android OS to secure you against malicious apps. An unpopular decision but the change is for your protection so its a good thing in my view. Hopefully FAT goes away and is replaced by a universal file system which is secure.

I'm not sure how Windows has fixed the issue or not...
Don't think apple allows sd anyway, they just empty your wallet for extra storage models, the chunts.

I believe app permissions will allow an app to write to an SD card if its installed on the sd card as it will 'own' its folder on the sd card, if the app is installed on the local storage its a no.

Thsnks mate, if only Google wasn't so necessary I would shitcan them. Is there a reason why cheap phones still seem to allow this, thanks

Cheap phones are on older versions of Android. Version 4.4 and down allow it, 5.0 and up killed it.

Yeah I jumped ship and went to a Windows phone, it was pretty shit but I installed the Beta of Windows phone 10 and it's awesome(aside from my contacts going away). Microsoft are supposedly allowing people to run Android apps after 10 comes out later in the year, hopefully they don't get as many access rights as they do on an Android phone, that's one of the reasons I like the Windows phone plus they are cheap and come with a year long Office subscription.

Fuck now you tell me. I love my Nokia's windows is so quick to nip around in and feels so nice to navigate and simple. But fuck me the lack of apps is an absolute killer, can't get shit. Just bit the bullet and bought an S5.

Funny the talk of SD cards and 'droids, I installed one and had so much trouble to get it to read. Left it in, but was getting all sorts of slowness, 5 second wake ups, really annoying shit you just can't deal with. Ripped it out and booyah fixed! Not sure it it was touchwiz or just in general trying to identify the card on Android. Really need to fix this shit, shouldn't have to deal with it on such a flagship device.
