Schoolies 2011 - The MTB Way

Like most, I'd say there's a pretty good chance you and your friends may go their separate ways over the next few years. I'd recommend finding out what your closest friends are doing and either do that (even if it means stepping out your comfort zone) or try and convince them to do something else.

I went to the Gold Coast for a night just to check it out, and I still (5 years later) regret not going for the whole time.

Yeah I don't drink and I don't intend on drinking and what not.
Possibly the only 16 year old like this.

But what do you guys consider me doing if I don't to be out "Getting smashed"?

Ok so thats two 16yo that don't drink... Kinda sad really.

And if you have nothing decent to say in this thread, please don't post. I really don't intend on going to a popular Schoolies place (Gold Coast, Airlie Beach etc. etc.) so don't post up crap saying that these places are awesome... I don't really care honestly.

What, you can't party and poke things without alcohol?

I hated schoolies cause I had a bitch of a gf and was a complete non-drinker throughout school (jesus christ, how that's changed) but I was still glad I went to say I went. Honestly if I didn't go I'd just go "fuck, wish I went to schoolies".

Infact now that I drink and party I wish I took up drinking for a week and went to GC for sick times!!

I raced the first Illinbah National instead of going to schoolies. Cold, wet, muddy, wet, camping, wet. If I had my time again, I would have done a mad schoolies trip, cause little did I know the Illinbah National the next year was going to be exactly the same haha.

But seriously, do what you wish Jake. If you can round up enough keen Mtbers to do an NZ trip then do that. The whole drinking/partying thing isn't for every one. By the time schoolies time rolls around next year things may have changed though, you might be the biggest party animal. You never know. And as many people have said before, it's not all about partying and not seeing a drop of daylight. I didn't go but I do beleive there is heaps of stuff to do during the day and plenty of stuff to keep you occupied late at night to keep out of trouble.

I'd come to NZ with you, but I'm opting to go the 20000km option in July so I'll be broke :D.

Yah, I see what you mean. Just seeing if anyone else would be keen at this stage.

Gay bum sex with the other non-drinkers.
Pull your head, your a perfect example of why the legal drinking age should be raised to 21.

You dont have to 'binge' drink, you can 'enjoy a few' if your having trouble 'getting loose' in a social situation.. Frankly I grew past it once I turned 18, and now actually drink for the taste, rather than the alcohol content.

Such class! Such responsibility! How I, and I'm sure all others, aspire to your level of unattainable elegance and self discipline! I for one, am in awe of you <3

blah blah blah get off your fucking high horse.

Not drinking is fun. Learning to socialise confidently with strangers while sober is something every one should try. You know what else is fun? Getting completely sloshed and slurring the lyrics to sultans of swing on a karaoke stage.

Newton's playground or whatever it's being called this year, it's a massive extreme sports festival lasting about 3 days, and it's at Bathurst. I"d be going this year if i wasn't going to the Gold Coast for schoolies. It looks pretty rad, downhill, bmx, skate, good music. I've always thought a little roadtrip would be cool instead of schoolies, travel around a bit for a week or two, hit up the best DH tracks Australia has too offer, and enjoy the nightlife of the clubs and pubs in each town. Although you guys don't drink now at 16 in two years time a lot can change

So your saying that you can only go and get wasted every night for a week during Schoolies Week? All Schoolies is, is a massive party every night where everyone gets smashed and then wakes up the next morning feeling like shit, in hospital or in the watch house...

Ever heard of doing something different for a change?
You can only really do schoolies once, and you'll probably never have a similiar chance again. And who the fuck has hangovers AT schoolies? Seriously? You drink 24/7, no chance to recover.
I stayed down at coolangatta. Bus ride in was a hoot!

You can go ride anytime mate, and you won't regret going up. The stories from there will always live on..

I can have lots of fun without drinking, but why take the chance?

HAHAH nice one. I barely touched a drop of booze til i finished school (Literally, the after formal party!) Glad I did, school definitely would have suffered. Now I get inibriated occasionally, and do enjoy drinking socially fairly often. Realistically, my average intake would be no more than a 6 pack a week, quite a bit less most weeks.

I am always amused by the minority of people who don't drink and how they always try and make people who do drink look like the devil. It seems either you don't drink, or your a raging alcoholic who can't wait to go smash down more alcohol. It can be done in moderation.

If you are happy enjoying yourself without booze half your luck, just don't try to enforce that on other people who happen to like partaking.

Yeah, Rotorua would probably be the place to go if you come over...I'd recommend bringing more than $1000 over - that won't get you any sort of trip if you expect to hire a car.
Why would you bother hiring a car? There's plenty to keep you busy in Rotovegas for a week and options for getting out of town that would be cheaper than car hire if you do get sick of the smell ;)
