Shimano XT brakes, are these cheap?

decent buy

but coupled with a voucher becomes a steal....... but tbh, you cant really beat $220 both ends....and waiting for a voucher to get them below $200 isnt worth the time (same applies to the rotors)

Shimano Brakes by far have been problem free for me , been using XTRs for the past 2 years and recently had a try on a friend's XT brakes.

Impressive power and good modulation .

A steal

That's a great deal mate you should go for it.

I bought my XT's off CRC about this time last year for $128 and end (w/out rotors) and I thought I got a good deal. I liked them so much after the first ride that I immediately ordered some for my DH bike and I have nothing but praise for their power, modulation and ease of set up. They are nice and quiet too, none of that squealing shit like you get with Avids.

$108 an end is an absolute steal for some of the best brakes on the market at the moment.

Do it.

Haha, got mine for $175 for both ends from CRC (using a $20 voucher)

To the OP, do it. Best decision you will make

It kinda shits me how Shimano do these without rotors and adapters. When I got mine it seemed like an incredibly good deal (similar to what you mention), but by the time I had farked around getting rotors and adapters it wasn't such a great deal anymore. Brakes should come as a complete set, it's not like you can use your Avid (or other brand) adapters, although if you're a cheapskate you can use your old rotors and get the worst of both worlds...

Im using formula adaptors with shimano XT brakes. I get your point though but thats commercialism for you. The alternative is a camel

Inconceivable!
Check out wiggle as well. When I brought mine a few months ago Wiggle was actually cheaper than CRC. Other than that, they are fecking awesome brakes

Having them separate makes a lot of sense for ease of stock control. You've gotta remember shimano don't just offer size options for rotors, but also six bolt and centrelock options. It's much easier for shops/distributors to stock a smaller number of brakes with a wider range of rotors and adapters as it takes a lot less capital than having 10 versions of one brake.

Throw in the options of third party rotors and stuff and I think the shimano way makes plenty of sense. Curious as to why you can't use other adapters either?

Having tried to use my old Avid adapters with XTs, I discovered that the tolerances are slightly different. Different enough for them not to work without all manner of dodgy spacers, longer bolts etc.

It may make sense not to include rotors/adapter from a bike shops POV, but from this buyers perspective it's just plain annoying. It means buying 3 items instead of 1.

Got my XT brakes working on Avid rotors and adaptors. No problems160R and 185f. I'll upgrade to shimano rotors one day but it's fine for now.

You know what I've always had problems with, a slight movement of my wrist followed by a lowering of my index finger.

it was great to have option of just buying the brakes when I already had adapters and rotors..waste not want not.

Really? Aside from the possible issues of mixing front/rear adapters and their offset difference (which doesn't matter half the time anyway) I can't see why you'd have issues. I've mixed plenty of adapters and never had much of an issue.

Can't say I agree on the annoyance thing either. By making it easier for the shops etc. to stock the items it means there's a better chance that they'll actually be available when I want to buy, rather than having to wait for the version with my size/mount to be ordered in. Throw in the bonus that I'm not being forced to pay for parts I don't need and I'll happily take three items over one.

Dumb question - do you get bolts with the adapters or do you need to buy them separately? I am about the hit the button on a set of XTs for a mate for his birthday and I want to make sure I get everything.
