There is also the type of going down that implies loosing or getting caught out...like when you catch me going on your wife and threaten that I'm going down! MThen give me a hiding so bad I won't be descending on my bike for a long time. Maybe puncture my lunch while punching me.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this so far:
Dampening - The act of making something wet.
Damping - A reduction or restriction of oscillation such as the movement of a fork, shock, etc.
Dampener - An object that makes something wet.
Damper - The component of your fork, shock, etc that controls the movement.
And whilst I'm being a pedant:
(Bicycle) Fork - A device that holds the front wheel.
Forks - The plural of fork.
I've never understood why people happily refer to the forks on their bike when they wouldn't consider the implement used for eating to be a forks.
