The bike industry crisis

Boomers gonna boomerscooter.

Plenty of sick secondhand bikes about to hit the market for cheeeeeeeeap. (Sucks if you gotta sell though...).
Yeah, I can't shift my old 2015 Norco Sight. I'm not going to give it away, but I would have thought that $1600 was a fair price for a bike that retailed at $7,300. It will sell when it sells. Fortunately, I'm not in any hurry.

You asked for a discount, you got a discount as well as some pedals. You're sounding ungrateful and hard done by? You're lucky they didn't tell you to get fucked.
People expect to be "looked after mate" or "help a battler out". The value in a sale is how well you're treated by the business you visit but that business does not need to remove all profit from a sale in the hope that you'll come back to the business to spend millions of dollars in future sales, parts and service. I'd feel absolutely like the lowest prick on earth if I asked for a discount. I don't actually think I've ever even done it. Either I can afford it or I'll save a bit more for it or I won't get it.
I know a guy who owns and operates a small bike repair business, what you said reminds me of what he told me last week. Customer comes in with a bike in pieces and components in boxes, said it's "almost built" and "won't take much work to complete", who should be the judge of that?

He quoted the customer approx. $450 to complete the job, given there was some unknowns. Customer immediately responds "make it $350". The response was no I'm telling you I have to say around $450 to complete the job because I don't know if everything will fit etc. Customer responds "my highest offer is $400", my friend told he said the guy could leave the shop if that was his attitude, it wasn't a bidding war. It costs what it costs. The guy grabs all of his stuff and storms out of the shop. Then returns 2 days later saying "fine, put it together and I'll pay whatever it costs". So he's come to his senses.
The additional request was the customer now wants tubeless, my mate said that will cost an additional $X as you need valves, sealant etc. The customer responds with "no, you are already going to charge me for other stuff so you can throw the valves in for free, and surely the shop has sealant so you can use that". Again my friend told him to leave the shop, at which point once again the flipped and agreed it will cost him money.

What is the summary here. People are greedy and want everything for nothing.

Consider splitting it into parts so you aren't competing against the other 1,000 people trying to sell complete bikes.

There are buyers out there who want a new bike but cannot afford even the used prices. They can however afford a frame upgrade.

GRRR! I cannot stand people like that! What a fucking prick. I'd do the work but he'd be paying for it in full before I touch it. I'd also stuff raw sausages in the seat tube then put the post in. What a fuckhead. Actually, I wouldn't degrade myself to work with someone like that at all. Your business is precious and can do without that kind of cliental. Go fuck yourself.

I have the same bike I'm about to get rid of. I think i bought it used in 2018 for like $1600. Looking at the market, (alu) would fetch about $1k but condition matters. I'm not fussed, more likely to pull it apart at this point. The brakes on it are worth half the bike I rekon lol (maybe 200km used XTs lol)

Man I hate to tell ya, but 1600 for a 10year old trail bike is still way too much.

I'd say most of us on RB only really sell bikes because of lack of space more than not needing it, or needing the cash. I need the space lol
Well, I'm pretty low on the leaderboard here at Rotorburn when it comes to N+1 having currently just 3 bikes, so one extra wouldn't be the end of the world.

We all know a gonzo that needs to borrow a bike from time to time.

Well, my brother borrowed it a couple of weeks back when he was getting his forks and shock serviced, and I have had the odd person send the club a message asking if there was anywhere to hire a bike locally (which there isn't) and lent them mine. So, it does come in handy.

Was just reading the below interview with 7 of the top bike importers from Flow magazine.
Interested to hear others thoughts.

Man that was a hard article to read, just from the literal sense it was hard to get through being so randomly done.

The bike industry isn't in a great space right now, but then neither are a lot of indutries. Those who play in either the lower end kid space, or the proper enthusiast end, are likely doing OK, but everything in the middle is definitely slowing. Which includes me, I'm holding off for a while as there are other priorities impacting cashflow, and even looking at parts get actual thought put in - do I actually need that?

For instance, my 10 (I think, maybe more) year old photochromic Oakleys are starting to shit the bed properly, with the lens material degrading. In other times I would have quickly and easiily just grabbed another pair, but I've considered that with daylight savings now here, I don't actually need a new photochromic set until next autumn... And that goes all the way through myu purchasing decisions, from small things to large things.

Oakley should be shut down. Their performance glasses are fucking horrendous. I've had a fair few pairs (some were given to me as part of a deal) and every single one of them had the material on the lens bubble and crackle off. The frames are only just okay. I wouldn't mind so much if they were $50 but what they are charging is other worldly. You can do without that overpriced plastic shit. ;)
I have Smith glasses and they demolish Oakley in every sense and half the price. try them ;)

Another reason I am still running the same pair of Oakleys for 5+ years. Though the coating has finally started to flake in areas, the clarity is still as good as the day I bought them.

The constant release of new styles to convince us to buy new, just isn't working for me.

The markup on sunglasses is criminal!

I got some as a fathers day present a couple of years ago. A few months ago I left them in the garage near my damp helmet and gloves. The entire front coating has cracked and gone flaky. Never seen that happen in my life. So hard to justify getting even replacement lenses for them now.

Do Smith go on sale regularly? Prices are in line or more than Oakley.

Always defaulted to Oakley but once my current set dies will try another brand.

Hard to impulse buy as above more though tput into purchases and lack of any really bargains around or discounts.

You comparing Apples with apples here? Smith glasses are just as wildly priced as Oakley

Do they make gravel versions?

Go on... bite!

I have a set of Oakley Radar EV Advancer Prizm Trail Torch glasses and I've always washed them with fresh water to prevent any degredation.

Well it looks like the lens is covered in tree sap (tiny nodules), is this the beginning of the bubbling everyone talks about?

I will say that I don't notice it when I wear them.
