Obviously it wouldn't be an overnight thing, and a lot of us would purchase overseas firearms, however deregulating it would allow local Australian's to put money into R&D and you may see some good Aussie made guns for our military and recreational shooters..
The reason our armed forces use overseas companies firearms is mainly because we don't have the industry, they do..
Jeeeeeeeeeeeeesus! I sort out dinner, search Australian gun makers on Google, and suddenly you guys are talking about lowering minimum wages! Lowering minimum wages won't achieve anything except for an even greater divide between those that have and those that dont. Have a look at the living conditions of the people in the countries that cover most of the worlds production and the argument for lower wages falls flat pretty fast. Well unless you are someone with a big vested interest in forcing people to live like shit.
Now back to something I don't even give a shit about....guns. turns out a reasonable amount of the defence forces weaponry is currently produced here. While not always designed here.

Unless wiki and Google have lied to me again.
I edited my post.
Before lowering minimum wage we need to look at ways of reducing the cost of living in Australia as, Australia is genuinely just an expensive country to live in, and because of that, has only just damaged us more than what the benefits are..
more pot + lower wages = less people inclined to get out of bed in the morning and work for a living. We're going to wake up one morning and find that Australia is now known as frankston![]()

Damn post edits catch me out all the time....
We don't need to lower wages, we need to think for the future. Sadly our business enterprises are conservative by nature and our successive governments are filled with brainless morons. Some examples of potential wage reduction impacts on business here :
- mining industry is well known for high wages. A 10% drop in wages is a 10% drop in costs and thus a 10% rise in profit. Or there abouts, I'm sure we could debate the accounting implications if anyone cared to. Why would Gina and co be pushing forower wages? Hmmmm....
- in retail big Gerry is well known for hateing online shopping. His business tentacles aren't just the well known retail giant, but a lot of importing and wholesaling and is also tied to finance. Lower wages would reduce access to foreign purchasing for some people and that flows straight into all facets of his business, including more lending for purchasers.
- defence maintenance contracting is a massive industry that requires highly skilled workers. Of course we have a skills shortage which makes demand stronger than supply abd drives wages up. Again if these wages were driven down, profits increase.
This can be applied to almost any industry.
I don't know what the future jobs are. When I was a kid nobody told me to learn how to be a website designerbor mobile phone salesman. But by the time I finished high school there was this thing called the web and people were making a killing on it. They were ringing each other on their mobile phones to brag about it. By investing in future knowledge and ideas (green energy for one example) those jobs will come about.
Make more sense to produce our own porn than our own guns
Which is a very strong argument for lowering minimum wage to make doing business here more attractive..
EDIT; We also need to look at ways of reducing the cost of living here before reducing minimum wage so people can actually get by on lower wages.
The cost of housing is a massive part of the problem, and there's a few things that can be done to help reduce it but there are very few pollies with the backbone to talk about it let alone address it. Don't expect it to be fixed any time soon.

Don't try and justify your co-curricular activities!
And this gun discussion is a not particularly compelling. Skydome - it is unfortunate for gun fetishists, but our legislation is designed to kill the gun culture. It has worked extremely effectively and been celebrated worldwide. I know it ruins your fun, but take one for the team and be grateful that the psychopath next door can't get their hands on the highly lethal firearms you desire. Surely you can access some suitably nasty guns now to keep you entertained?
The economic impacts from a less regulated firearm industry aren't worth talking about. The policies could never be introduced either - the politicians involved would be blamed for every subsequent gun-related murder or injury. And only a tiny proportion of the population want more guns. I think the majority of voters would still want less firearms in circulation.

Thanks for swinging things to the overall Nanny state we live in skydome! You are absolutely correct about our governments intruding too far into our personal freedoms. For too long small joys of our lives are gradually taken away in exchange for the illusion of being safe. I'm pretty sure the myth of safety and the myth of constant risk (both lies are forced on us by the media and politicians as tools of the capitalist elite) are merely here to control the populace.
Would a bill of rights style document resolve this? Do we need to become a republic so we can do away with our legal history and start over? And does anybody really give a shit which royal is visiting and what they are going to do whilst here?
Could you maybe keep it to one can of worms at a time?
