How so? He never got a shot at the title.

Turnbull was originally ousted by the party for his support of the carbon emissions scheme. Losing to the also ran candidate, Abbott.

Labor lost the following election, leaving Abbott as PM by default.

Turnbull's policies resonate pretty well with the voting public by and large, his biggest hurdle will be getting things past the hardliners and National Party hillbillies and implementing them.

As long as lessons were learnt from the Rudd/Gillard dog and pony show, and he swings the axe strategically, he has a excellent shot come election time.
Its my view that the swingers will prefer madam secretary than an arrogant solicitor with $190m in the bank and no dinosaur park.

But I'm not willing to put a pack o Tim Tams on it.

Who is going to govern better. The leader who knows she/he has a full term to do what he/she thinks is the right thing for Australia or the leader who knows unless she/he is winning the short term polls by pacifying the majority he/she is going to get booted.

Remember just because in a democracy the majority always wins doesn't mean the majority are always right.
Comes down to doing your job properly. Remember that little cunt Howard? Plenty of shit rained down on his parade, particularly in his first term, but by assembling a committed cabinet and sticking to his guns (no pun intended) he got through and spent 11 years raining terror down on us.

Do your job, make things betterish, and most of the tarts will see the benefits.

Scatter gun shite all over the shop, drop the ball, flush it down the sink, and somebody's going to line you up in their sights.

I was referring to why would other countries laugh at our political system, a party throws its own leader out, when they should be trying to run a country. It's not just a one-off either.
Really, someone gets the arse because they're incompetent, and that's the height of hilarity?

As implied before, plenty of other populations would be grateful for the same, as apposed to civil war, riots, ethnic cleansing or genocide because their leader is an incompetent despot.

Don't think Australians are ready for Thatcher on meth, just yet, no matter what the alternative. Scary enough she's riding shotgun.......

I'm sure his party voted on some of these incompetent decisions, when they seen the polls were against him and knew their jobs were on the line at the next election, out the door he goes.

Do we?

Or is that the campaign line taken to the last election by a party, so bereft of actual policy, that the only thing they had to offer over the incumbent government was, better us than them? It was parroted by the LNP, their supporters and the Fairfax media so much, it became mantra. Hell, Abbott was still using it, as his only reason he should keep the job.

To me it's actually democracy at work. We had a leadership so out of touch with the electorate, or world for that matter, that someone decided enough was enough, and acted. The fact that it didn't require a coup, revolution or assassination, actually speaks volumes on the health of our political system. It is, however and indictment on the piss poor ability of our politicians.
"Do we?"

Well, tha ALP seem to think so, but the point is made - whatever the media and pollies tell the populace, they start to parrot if it's from their side of the political fence that it's coming.

In the Libs, the real people we have to be concerned about are muppets like Corey Benardi who would rather be in opposition than have a liberal as leader of the LIberals.

Luckily, a majority of the party realise that you can only do things when you have the power of govt.

So, what things have to be done if the ALP want to drop Billy?

The Rudd legacy is a straight jacket

A those that did are probably programming centrelink into their speed dial as we speak.

But then there was: Bishop as speaker, Sir Prince Phillip, paid parental scheme, Medicare copayment (which even Hockey opposed ffs), Q&A appearance ban, heritage delisting of Tassie forests, the quid pro quo Dyson Heydon appointment. All his sole responsibility.

The numbers speak for themselves, Abbott ousts Turnbull by one vote, Turnbull returns the favor 10 votes clear.
It's more of a 'what the fuck did we do?' reaction to Abbott's pigheaded stupidity than an, 'shit the polls a looking a bit grim' situation.

Yeah Hockey was a bit of a disaster but you also have to look at our economic climate.

A lot of Australians can't handle that we are living in the aftermath of a GFC, things are tight with money, if you think Australia is bad, go and live in Europe. We can't compete in a global market with our over the top labour prices, our resources are not in demand as they were years ago. Where is all this money going to come from, population is getting bigger, more mouths to feed.

Something has to give, no PM or party is going to fix this shite up.

Some of this might come back to Abbotts pigheadedness. Ie - he won't consult and influence to get things through the senate.

Fwiw, as someone who has worked next to the health system for a long time, I think the co payment was a great idea - a plus for science and research (an area where Australia has a competitive advanatge), and a long term controller of costs. I see how many people get tests and see Drs for nothing - I hear about it all day - but it sure wasn't sold well. I actually think the people who wrote the policy were quite sure that labor would support it, and we're a bit shocked by the backlash

It is still rediculous though that none of the headline savings have managed to get through the senate - I have the same disdain for the senate as Keating - it by and large stops govts from governing .

Unrepresentative swill.

Yep, it wasn't until I travelled overseas and lived with my Dad in Southern Italy, that I realised how good our medical system is here. He has non-hodgkin's lymphoma, doctors cant even tell you what's going on. The pay for doctors in the public sector is so low, they don't give a rats arse about anything, swop and change jobs all the time, don't bother turning up for shifts, records of appointments and contact info get lost. I thought I was in a third world country, the poor bloke can only just eat and is virtually starving himself to death.

I think it all comes back to Abbott's pigheadedness. I wonder how many people will now concede that Tony Windsor and Rod Oakeshott's decisions to back Gillard over Abbott was the right call? Of course, there will always be those who claim the Libs were wronged there. But realistically, the Libs have taken two years to work out that Abbott just doesn't have what it takes to be PM, something Windsor and Oakeshott worked out in one or two weeks.

I always had doubts about Abbott's ability to listen, negotiate, take tough decisions then stand by them or explain them, or generally do anything where the pay off was more than two weeks away. I just hope that Turnbull is better on all those points. But it will be interesting to see if the Libs can put the change in leader behind them and move forward with a united front, something Labor were never able to do.

Seriously, whichever yutz is in the PM roll is irrelevant. It's just our contemporary fascination with the cult of personality (or lack there of) that's making it an issue.

Lets just revive the good old days of fascist/socialist party politics and get on with hating whoever your parent's parents didn't vote for.

We need a strong personality as leader. If history is any guide, they'll at least get the trains running on time. Forza Malcolm!

Repeatedly people who know him personally, have said, the Tony Abbott you see is nothing like the real person. Suspect the architects of the slogan politics convinced him it was the way out of the hole.
And I'm sure anyone of us could provide a long list of people who would vouch for how nice we are. His friends are going to stick up for him because they like him...usually based on having similar interests and experiences and goals, which in this case would be more representative of his friends also being arseholes.

Believes in action on climate change

Believes in equal rights for same sex marriages and has done for a long time

Believed in the apology to the stolen generation

Probably heaps more that escape me, but that's a pretty reasonable position of dosage meant with the conservatives within the coalition
This is definitely a step in the right direction for the country. But it is a small step, we require a great leap.

Indeed. A banker, a solicitor, a betrayer of the people...sure he has done well to show us his good ideas (you know those that are well known TL be in contradiction of Abbott), what about his well hidden uber capitalist desires? They have been well hidden. I wonder what his position on income tax is these days?

It's show how degraded australian politics have become when a socialist hippy like me thinks a millionaire Liberal leader is our best choice for PM at the moment
Tis a internally tumultuous time.

Politicians make a lot of promises, hardly ever follow through and their agenda is not always transparent to the public.
Who are you voting for at the end of the day?
I have often thought that our system lack accountability on this. Sure sometimes things don't get through for valid reasons, but where is the authority that says "fuck that for a joke..." And slams down the foot? I have. O answer for how to create that scenario, but would be interested in a model that had some kind of a representative over seer.

I really want to see what happens to cabinet and other appointments now. Abetz, Hockey, Dutton, Andrews must be watching their backs. I'd expect Nikolic won't be whip much longer. Morrison must be feeling a heavy weight now. Brandis?

Oh how I'd love to see Abetz out of a portfolio, that dreadful man.
Whip? What about the old lizard? Ruddock? Dude looks like Mr burns fucked one of the lizards from V...

I just remembered this from a while ago:

I would like to know what steps our esteemed mod is taking to get his colloquialism firmly into place in the Australian psyche.
Should be pretty easy provided the Australian public don't mind being portrayed as a donkey or ass. Turnbull sitting on our back dangling a carrot in front would be a very fitting cartoon.
