The GoPro HD All You Need To Know Thread

This is the place to post any input you have to contribute to riders considering potential purchases and current owners.

I'll be adding the settings that I have found work best when uploading to Vimeo.

In the meantime here is my zipline rig that I have put together. I'm just waiting on my line to arrive so I can start testing it out. If you're interested I can post links to provide further information on the parts used.

Anyone else rigged up anything similar yet?

Got a gopro on the way, interesting zipline rig, if you need to zipline faster or over long distances that are relatively flat I've used a similar rig with CO2 canisters powering them along distances of a few hundred metres for sending things on a similar lightweight zipline rig.

Would make for an interesting shot on high speed sections.

hey man, i'm interested on where you got your pulleys and line. Can't find decent pulleys anywhere and I'm very much considering building my own.

I got my pulleys from a boat/chandlery shop. I think they were about $10.00 each as they are stainless steel. I'll see if I can find the tag that was on them for more info.

I got my line on ebay as it was by far the cheapest.

The universal ram mount came from here...

I used a flat sticky mount to attach the GoPro unit to the base of the ram mount.

Basically I am trying to replicate this guys method...

There's a really useful article that is worth a read if you have or are thinking of getting a GoPro HD at http://www.actioncamerasblog.com/2010/05/24/382/. It's all about how to edit the footage and what software is available.
Nice find there.

I'll try and update the first post at some stage this week with most of what I can remember from the original thread.

Hopefully testing out my zipline for the first time tonight. Fingers crossed it turns out ok!

What do people think of the Contour HD vs the GoPro HD? I have both here for testing, but i havnt had a chance to rig up any tests between the two. Ill be primarily using them for motorsport stuff though, incar footage of the race car.
Sofar though i do prefer the Contour simply because the rolling shutter on the GoPro can be quite sickening if the mount is vibrating at a harmonic of the shutter speed.

Out of the two I prefer the GoPro because it has slightly warmer colours, and I think better small detail quality at similar resolutions. I also like that the GoPro gets much better film at night than the ContourHD, as I intend to not just use the camera for DH. I based my decision largely off this video here:

I gave my zipline it's first run yesterday. Only captured 3 short runs because it takes a while to do this on your own. There's more of a description on the actual Vimeo page. Anyway take a look if you want...

Ok I expected that to turn out awesome, and it didn't disappoint. Going to have to build myself one of these over easter now.

Has anyone else managed to get a zipline going yet?

I tried to stretch mine out over 90m but couldn't find an end point high enough so it sagged in the middle. Can be done though!

I've also noticed a few scratched in the lens on my housing. I've ordered some cleaner/scratch removal liquid. Has anyone used similar products before and had success?

Thats so cool! Love the last take where the rider pulls infront of the camera

Ive got a gopro in the post. What types of mounts do you guys find you use the most? Chestcam? helmet?

I've probably used my chest mount the most. I haven't even tried helmet mount (I don't want to stick the mount to my shiny carbon Palmer).

I also purchased the handlebar mount and have used it on my bars, forks and chainstay. There are a million angles to be captured with this mount.

Zipline is a favourite so far.

Chest cam is by far the best mount you can buy, i dont like the helmet cam cause it can often get bashed by branches etc, unless you mount it under your visor.

The zipline looks liek a mad idea though.

I took this video as a test the other day, it uses the chest cam.

I only wish the GoPro could adjust to light changes quicker.
