The Photo Snob Thread

Yeah, I try to format my cards after I've finished a set/day/trip. Once they're on the PC and backed up (which I should actually do more often) they come off the card.
Cards are for shooting with, not backup.

Here's a picture:

I'm trying to learn from the ground up, so if it will make a difference to all my photos, then I'll shoot RAW from now on. Only have an 8gb CF card so can only fit @250 photos on there apparently. Never really liked deleting stuff off my cards. Think I'm afraid of loosing the photos of the kids etc if the computer crashes. Does everyone else here delete their cards regularly???
I format my card every time I shoot, but I also have one 8GB, one 4GB, three 2GB and one 1GB cards spare, on top of the 8GB card that always stays in my camera, just incase I get a little trigger happy. If they are used though, they're formatted after the cards are on the computer/hard drive.

Solution to your concern? Save up $89 and buy another 8GB card from HERE to have as a spare so you can shoot RAW and don't have to worry about having to delete photos, then save up $99 and buy a 500GB external HD from HERE so that every time you're finished shooting you can come home, load the photos onto the computer and then hard drive (or just the hard drive), then store the thing in your sock drawer...

Definitely the most practical method in my eyes, because yes, shooting RAW will make a difference.

I second what Tristan has said. I offload the cards in the camera after each shoot onto the pc/laptop. Make a copy to an external usb drive and the drive then gets unplugged and put on the shelf that is my backup. I then make another copy of the pics on the pc and use that to edit modify etc. With the cost of hard drives these days I just get what ever is at the $100 mark as a usb drive mine go from 80gb upwards the current one is 750gb and is taking a while to fill...I never rely on the pics being on the card been caught before where I thought I had backed stuff up formatted the card without checking bad mistake...

I'm with Tristan on this as well. But if you're really paranoid, invest in two external drives. I now run dual external 1TB drives for my photos backup alone.

Would anyone be interested in buying a brand new Nikon mount Tokina 10-17mm f3.5 fisheye? I paid $600 for it, will take $570, never ever used as i was meant to order Canon mount, and if i can do this really really soon it may work out more economical than paying for shipment back to honk kong for it. PM me.

OK thanks for the advise. I've changed the settings to RAW and deleted all files from my card. Can fit 355 images on my card. I'll wait before getting another card as at the moment I'm saving my arse off for a 70-200 f2.8, a second 430EXII and a Manfrotto 190XPROB with 804RC2 head. Got Hahnel remote triggers for Fathers Day so I can shoot with my 430EXII off camera now.

Love how I've always hated the AF in Full Manual for like 2 or 3 model shoots now, and finally AFTER doing another one today I discover multi control to pick the focus point. Yeah lml.

Purchased my first dslr yesterday :) 50D, picked it up cheap with a 18-200 f3.5-5.6 IS, in the wake of the 60d release. Figured paying almost $1000 less than retail outweighed video, floppy screen and sweet toy camer4 effectz.
Here is my first dslr image, got a lot to learn but very excite. (yes the background is quite overexposed)

AF is overrated. MF FTW
MF supreme lenses, such as the Ziess are without a doubt better glass, and in most cases probably are more superior than their AF equivilants; Portraiture, Landscapes, Still cars, etc. But obviously not desirable for people like me who shoot a fair bit of Sport.

Needless to say, i'd love to get a 50mm Ziess for those other brackets!

Those Canon S90s look so horrible, reminds me of some 90's kodak.

you only say that because you dont have a choice:p
But that was a choice he made in the first place, so technically, he did. :p

I went into Teds last week to have a look at a S90. Was informed that the S90 was out of production and for only $100 more I could purchase the S90s which was the same camera, except with HD video.

Ended up with this for $100 less than the S90:

Yeah, probably not a bad little P&S, i'm speaking purely on the basis of appearance, it's just ugly ahha.

damn right.

I'm just having a bit of fun. AF has some specialist applications, and is useful for minor aspects of photography.
I do usually use MF myself, it's even better on the 5D II now you can zoom in on the screen and get your focus spot on!

Also, guys, my 40d+battery grip and 24-85 f3.5 is still for sale! $800 posted for the lot!
