Heart choice
Audi Q7 2011-2015 v6 (but scared of the expensive old euro driveway ornament if it breaks)
I would agree with your fears, one of those will definitely keep you poor and frustrated.
I would be sticking with a well maintained with history Jap vehicle if you are looking around 2011.
The Korean ones weren't so good back then.

Q7s can be ok, a few mates have had that platform (Q7, Cayenne, Touareg) as tow pigs for race cars. There are quite a few things that must be done to stop them self destructing though and a couple of factory options to be avoided. Having said that, I'm not brave enough to own one out of warranty.
My advice is don't get a 7 seater unless you have 4 kids, it just means you have to deal with other people's children more often.

This^.
I refuse to get missus a 7 seater " it will be handy for kids sports"... We have 3 kids and they fit in a 5 seater.
Territory would leave you money in the bank for travels, is huge, basic but thirsty. So is CX9/range rover/Q7...

biased opinion, the mitsubishi delica. comfortable 7 seater, can fold seats and carry a bike or two without disassembly, can fold seats and comfortably sleep in the back.

I've got an older L400 model, probably wouldn't recommend as a soccer mum car due to the size and turning circle though.
I've head good things about the newer and smaller D5 model, no experience with them myself

Or get a dual cab 4x4 ute. fuck it, get two of them, both raptors. dont even pretend to put tools in them, and make sure to tailgate anything european on the off chance its haakers or someone like him :D

If you're not that set on a 7 seater, a couple of left field options if you can find them at the right age...
VW Passat Alltrack
Skoda (Octavia if you're short, Superb if you're not) Scout
You'll want to have a decent 3rd party VW mechanic though, they're not so bad if you've got someone effective servicing it, gets real expensive otherwise.
VW Alltrack Multivan or something like that in good condition will likely be way more than $20k.

Thanks all for the comments so far, sorry for the f-wit original post that didn't say much. Its so hard to reply with so many comments and ideas but here goes.

I've lost the argument on why we don't need a 7 seater but I'm not looking for a full on people mover that can seat 7 adults comfortably. 5 real seats plus 2 usable for kids / teens if needed, is a satisfactory compromise acceptable to all.

Yes I'm Odyssey curious but cant see myself ever driving one

Delica if it was for me as a getaway van I'd happily have a L400, doesnt look like any of the D5's are in WA and I cant see the wife driving one either.

Territory, I had one previously as a work car luckily I didn't have to pay the fuel bill enough said...

XC90 seems semi interesting, reasonably priced Euro luxury a bit like a Q7 I guess. My best mate had a diesel one and something broke, the so called Swedish car experts who were servicing it were clowns and had no idea what they were doing and it became his expensive Euro driveway ornament, that he sold not running to a wrecker.

So far the Koreans seem to be in the front running, as we looked at and drove some 2015/16 Santa Fe's and Sorento's today that seemed ok even with over 100K on them.

Tell me more on what needs to be done to prevent self destruct and what to avoid as I'm still V A G curious. The original idea I had in mind of a "nice family car" that could be used for soccer mum duties and family touring was a 7P V6 tdi Touareg (preferably a 4xmotion), which is where the Q7 idea morphed from.

Injector seals are quite a common issue, as are air bag failures. Avoid sun roofs, particularly moon roofs at all costs. Lower kms is generally the way to go when looking second hand, higher km cars have transfer case issues.
I've got a new Touareg at the moment and don't really rate it, it's my first VAG and I won't be back. Previous car was a Volvo and it was miles better but they only make 4 cyl petrol and I can't tow my race car with that eco shit.
The answer is clearly Toyota, but for some reason used Toyota's are like Bitcoin and the prices make no sense.

I have a KIA carnival, not really a suv but you can take the middle seats out and the back row folds down for large van room. The seats are super comfy for long trips. The down side is that is that is still NOT big enough for my 3 kids not to fight on a car trip. I do need to upgrade soon to something that can go light off road better.

I think the Rexton might be slightly over your budget, but maybe you can find a desperate seller. Probably have some of the remaining 7yr warranty too.
I've got a Musso ute, really well put together vehicles :)

Mate has a Santa Fe. Goes alright, back two seats are a squeeze for adults but fine for kids or non vertically challenged teens. Outlander probably the easiest option as there will be a gazillion of them in second hand land, they don't have any major issues that I am aware of and parts are easy to get. Yep they are the vanilla-est of vanilla cars but given it's a mum taxi and you aren't sure if you want it long term it's an easy flip down the line.

I don’t know how you’d go finding one but my uncle had one of these with 7 seats.
Ours didn’t have the extra seat cause we had dogs.

Four seats though.
I had one of these and bought the shotgun seats from Canada for a steal (Subaru parts always cheapest from Canada instead of dealership prices here)

I know of one two streets away without the seats that seemingly abandoned in a carport.

Yeah they had seats bolted backwards in the boot. Good luck getting away with that now haha. So many rounds of scissors paper rock at red lights.

I’d do very dirty things for a nice brumby. Ne of my teen dream cars.
