For those of you going to Italy let us know - we are organising our Wild Wombat MTB Challenge the following week in Austria/Styria which is about a 6hr drive from Finale Ligure via Venice.
The website is in German but I added the "Google Translate" tool to it (which I saw on the WEMBO site - thanks Russ for the idea :)

Jason already mentioned that he is keen to come.

We are running the event for the second year in a row now in Juliane's hometown and it would be nice to have an Australian contingent there. There is also our facebook site with pics from last year's race:

WEMBO 2012 Finale Ligure World Entry Lists as of 13 April

Progress Lists attached - one is by Country so you can see the Aussie contingent. Still some work to do sorting out some duplicates and the categories - as it looks like some people have entered age-group instead of Elite (I've changed a couple) - and entries are still open and you can still enter if you've suddenly got the ping after Easter.

Jess Douglas is now in, so both world champions from Canberra 2010, plus Tinker Juarez.

Per the other thread:

Hey Russ,
Can the mtba provide any guidance re insurance to race overseas?
Who has booked flights already and can provide advice there?
Who from team Aus is keen to make the trip as a group and organise minimise luggage etc?
Also, Russ, i imagine you are super busy atm prepping for worlds, but id be keen to hear your thoughts re u23/25 when you have some time.

Cheers,

Andrew
You can email MTBA about this. They can provide international insurance to cover the race. Cost depends on number of applicants, which normally means it isn't finalised until close to the event.

While not the closest airport, Milan (Malpensa) seems to be the best from Australia. It is then about a 2.5 to 3 hour drive to Finale Ligure. Trains in Italy are also very good. While Nice, and even Genoa, airports are closer, the flight schedules mean it is longer travel time by the time you actually get to Finale Ligure.

You original comment on this was correct. The U23 decision was made to fit in with the normal UCI categories. We also found that it provided a more level playing field for the younger riders, because those 23/24 yo riders were really there in the "Elite" end of the field in a lot of cases, so better to put them with the higher age group.
Which hotel is everyone getting accomodation at?
Is anybody to keen to cut costs by chipping in to hire a van type thing instead of a car?
Is everyone following the advice of flying into Milan?
I have contacted the MTBA re insurance but havent hear back. Am also investigating AIG.
Is anybody thinking of hiring a mechanic over there. I know a couple of the poms sent emails to LBSs in Canberra looking for somebody to be there for a few of them during the race.

Hey all,

Just had a look at sun rise/ sun set times. Looks like we are only facing 11 hours of darkness. Does this seem right or is my 3rd grade Italian failing me?

Average weather for 19-20 may seems to be 11-24 celcius.

The MTBA insurance is for the race. Normal travel insurance will cover you for riding, but not normally for racing. If you find a travel insurance policy that will cover you for racing, please let us know. I recommend you have travel insurance as well as the MTBA race cover. The one big expense you might be faced with if injured, is a medivac-type flight home. These can be hugely expensive if not insured.

In terms of when you will be notified by MTBA, this would not normally happen until they get the final number of applicants, becuase the cost per person depends ont he number of applicants. So - I expect an answer around end of April.

Travel insurance - racing cover

If you find a travel insurance policy that will cover you for racing, please let us know.
A few of us used a policy through ihi Bupa (www.ihi.com) for the Cape Epic. You'll struggle to find any originators in Australia that will cover racing (unless it's "on foot") - we spoke to specialist sports brokers and heard a consistent story. The ihi Bupa policy covered MTB racing, but please do your own due diligence and check the current policy document (and extent of cover). You can apply here - https://global.ihi.com/travel+insurance/buy+travel+insurance.aspx?sc_lang=en. The appealing thing about this policy was having an annual cover option which allows multiple trips (if you're lucky enough to race overseas more than once in a year!).

Good luck!

Hey Russ,

Is it possible to get me hands on a copy of the policy itself, even if it is from the 2009 worlds, just so I can get an idea of what it covers.

Regards,

Andrew

You would need to email MTBA for that - not trying to duck the question, just that policy wordings change from time to time so what matters is now, not 3 years ago.

Once again we would like to invite everyone of the Australian delegation to the Worlds to race at the Wild Wombat MTB Challenge in Styria/Austria the following week. This means free race entry and we will help you find a cheap accommodation in Gnas as well. Just sent an email to everyone but some bounced back. If you are keen please let me know and we will sort out the details - would be great to welcome some of our Aussie riders in Gnas, Juliane's hometown.

Italian Team 24 Hr

Also, for anyone who wants to hang around on a beach for a week, please remember that the gang at Finale Ligure are putting on their annual team 24 Hr on the weekend following the World Solo Champs. This is one of the big events in Europe, with over a 10 year history, and the current plan has what sounds like a serious MTB party occupying that intervening week.
