Pretty sure most full power ebikes put out more than 500W peak power?
A Bosch CX on a Trek Rail will put out 600W, and the Spesh 2.2 on a Levo will do 565W

The 250w limit is the maximum continued rated power which is different to peak power. How they come to the 250w as a continually rated power with all these different peak power ranges I really don't know. It might all be bullshit.

I have that same motor on my Ibis.
The Amflow has 1000w at 120nm for 30 seconds bursts on boost, and the boost button can he hit again immediately when the boost runs out, so you could continuously ride in boost.
Rules are being flouted and I definitely reckon a few have already overstepped the mark but they are getting around it with MCR power.

There is a standard, and from memory its like tested for 8 seconds or something. so most cut the max off at 7.9s.
Maybeits 30s (or not AS?). But yes, mostly self assessed and no one checks.

Not really, these are for offroad use, so they don't have to comply with legal requirements to ride on the street.

Depends where you are... In Victoria, basically if they're not being ridden on private property, they'll be illegal.

Technically they do have to meet Australian standards like having reflectors on the wheels and dork disks and there is still a 25kph speed cut which is really only a shared pathway requirement. Unlike a motorcycle for instance where it needs to be registered, so there is specifically an ADR compliant bike that is able to be registered for the road and a non-ADR compliant bike that cannot be registered and is for off road use only.
I think bicycles are still a bit of a grey area as you can ride you mountain bike on the road, on shared pathways and off road.

Not proper e-bikes but...For derro-bikes, no-one seems to care at all...
Can get 1000W and disable the "twist throttle below 6km/hr" for "off-road" use..
Regularly get passed/swiped by these doing 50-60k's on bike paths

Well, legally they are just electric motorcycles. It would be no different than riding a motorcycle down the bike path. Same goes for those high powered, unlimited scooters that can do 100kph. There's a couple of guys I've seen riding them with full face motorcycle helmets.
I kind of think, once you go that far you may as well just get a proper motorcycle. Legally you would have to register those bikes, and even then, I doubt they are ADR compliant, so you couldn't ride them on the road either.

I have ignored this thread until about a month ago. However, circumstances have changed and I have now read it all in the last half hour.
I have been riding, and always owned a bike since I was 6 years old. I am now 66.
I tore a minescus in my right knee bushwalking in New Zealand in late November.
I noted that many who posted on this thread have health issues (making me feel a bit like a cry baby by comparison). I have never been against E bikes; just not interested in owning one. I have often said that I would ride an E bike before I am not riding at all.
Well the time may have come. I feel with the exercise, strength training and diet regime,I will come right. But I am worried my knee will always be vulnerable. In addition, I think I will tire more quickly.
So I have my niece's Focus Thron E bike this week. I tried to ride me trail bike last week; big mistake. So I rode on the road while Yvonne rode from the Blue Tier to Swim Cart Beach(grrrr).
I actually worked up a sweat.
So now the hunt has begun. Am I having a Like Skywalker moment?

Jokes aside, I have bad knees my whole life with an ACL reco back when I was 18, plus my the hip replacement but neither of these issues gave me problems riding.Last week though, I did have an issue with my breathing and I was quite aways from my car but thanks to the e-bikeI was able to get back without major issues as there was still a fair bit climbing to be done, which was the whole reason why I got it.
I do have the itch to build a nice light or steel 29er meat powered hardtail for some winter duties.

Get an arthroscopy done. I had a lateral tear on mine after sliding down a roof with my leg bent below me, was in pain initially but could ride a max of about 20km while waiting on an op in the public system. Cant remember the exact length of time but it was about 8 weeks (10 max) after tearing it till the op was done. Don't down play it when you go to get a referral to the Hospital from your Doc, we're not talking an English Footballer fowl act but tell them exactly how it has impacted your pre injury performance and work life.

I would love to. The Gods are conspiring. Injured just before Xmas, docs on holidays throughout January. I have private insurance so...
And I have been pleading with them about the impact. We will see.

Sweet, that makes it so much easier ! Get a referral to a SportsMed Clinic and get err done. I walked out of the hospital after the op, was back to normal in a couple of weeks.
