I'm looking to make the move into full XC from FR and AM and i'm unsure what size frame to get. Iv been looking at the Garry fisher (2010)/ Trek Superfly bikes and im stuck between the 15.5" and the 17.5" frames, Iv been offered a really good deal on a 15.5" Fisher superfly but i'm uncertain if this will be too small for me.

Height: 5'6" (167cm)
instep/seem: 30" (75cm)

2011 (trek) Superfly - http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bike...ikes/mountain/cross_country/superfly/superfly

2010 (Fisher) superfly - http://fisherbikes.com/bike/model/superfly

Please no amateur reply's, I'm about to unload a lot of cash (within Aus) and i want to get it right.

Thank you

Yes but they are always trying to Sell the stock they have and all shops have different sizes they are trying to clear. Forums as a good source on non bias advice (hopefully).

The 17.5" has a 23.5" effective top tube, which would seem pretty long for someone of your height. If you can get a ride on a 17.5" you should be able to rule it in/out pretty quickly just based on that measurement I think.

Get a bike fit

Honestly, the best money you will ever spend on cycling is a professional fit. If you told, even your best friend you relied on this website for fitting advice, they would piss themselves laughing. Given, there are some honest people out there. We can't see you, we cannot visualize hip/back/posture faults etc. We cannot see pedal stroke or position on the bike for you. Please, for your sake, go and talk to a couple of shops near where you live. Find a professional bike fit service and then, go shopping.

The worst thing that could happen is that you learn something. Purchasing the wrong size bike has bigger implications than you think. I hope this helps and you find the perfect bike for you.

Wow, apparently there are other bertically challenged people on this site.

I'm also 168 cm and always, always prefer to go to a smaller frame.
Just as a guide, my Yeti is a small and has an effective top tube of 22.8" or 57.15cm.
For a few years I ran a 90mm stem with a flipped 6 degree rise.
I've since moved to a 100mm stem with a flipped 11 degree rise as i wanted to get the front end a bit lower. This certainly had the effect of granting me far more traction when high speed cornering.
I ride it as more as an XC bike at the moment rather than an AM setup, but if I wanted to go back, changing out the stem would do it nicely I think.
My suspicion is that the larger frame would see you far too stretched out over the TT causing you difficulties in more techy terrain.

Hi there, I know this post is a few years old, but I am in the exact same boat as you (5'6.5" / 29.5" inseam/173 pounds). What did you end up going with, 15.5 or 17.5?
