Stand by me was originally performed by Ben E King & has been covered (terribly IMO) by John Lennon &, as has been said, by Pennywise.

Sevendust - Hurt (NIN)
Disturbed - Land of Confusion (Phil Collins or Genesis)
Machine Head - Message in a bottle (Police)
Foo Fighters - Baker Street (Gerry Rafferty?)
Orgy - Blue Monday (New Order?)
Korn - One (Metallica)
Most of the covers Metallica do on garage inc.

Many more may come to mind but can't think of any more at the moment.

Oh, How about Lee Harding - Eye of the tiger or Mary J Blige - One (U2):D, only kidding.

Any cover done by The Living End is great I think, they started as a covers band and do it really well.

The Power and the Pasion Album which is Midnight Oil songs covered by Australian bands is really good.

And I think Pennywise do a cover of Land Down Under which is really good.

Avril lavigne's cover of SOAD's 'Chop Suey?'

My favourite all-time song 'Dead Souls' by Nine Inch Nails (orig. Joy Division)

I love 'I Put a Spell On You' (Credence) and 'Sweet Dreams' (Eurythmics) by Marilyn Manson.

Check out 'Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?' (Rod Stewart) by the Revolting Cocks (Al J from Ministry).

A B-Side cover which I like is Supernaut by 1000 Homo DJ's (I think), Al J and Trent Reznor

Avril Lavigne's cover of SOAD's Chop Suey

You are absolutely right, her "version" is the biggest shit barge ever.

Another vote for:
Mad World
The Herd

Just heard that Thunder In My Heart Again song and CANNOT get it out of my head.

Hey i just rememered the version of 'Smells like teen spirit' that Wierd Al Yankovic did ages ago, can't recall his title for it (different lyrics as well to the same tune) but it was almost better than the original! :p
