Does iPhone 5 eat dicks?

You only had one invention in that list (see below). The rest are products refined from others, which is what I say they did. The bit I have an issue with is that they claim the tech as theirs after they have done so and people mindlessly believe. Other points on your list were available but not marketed the same, e.g. portable digital music and online music sales, and you're really snatching at thin air with your last two items.

Also, google the Xerox Alto - Apple did not invent the mouse.
I stand corrected on the mouse. I didn't research that but was told about it.

My point is that yes, they may not have invented these things but they've done them in a way that previously was executed badly or not as well as Apple have done.

I had a touch screen mobile phone in 2002, it was awful. Nokia released touch screen phones before Apple, they were better, but still awful. Apple released the iPhone and did touch control well. Who gives a flying fuck if they stole the idea, if your mum makes shitty chocolate cake and I stole her ingredients to make an awesome chocolate cake that you actually wanted to eat would it mean that my cake was worse because I used someone elses ingredients?

Snatching at thin air with the last two, really? I think that allowing the older generation to be IT literate and have access to technology is a greater feat than many others, I've tried for years to get my gran to use a computer, she hates them, it's a completely foreign concept and that's mainly because common sense doesn't get you far with a PC, with an iPad however she can now email, access teh wealth of information that she was cut off from on the internet and have video chats with her first great grandchild on the other side of the planet, to me that is a more impressive contribution to the world than a phone that can access data 3 times faster or has a better resolution or UI. I'm happy to concede that it was only made possible by using technology created by others, but none of them have achieved the same feat depite trying.

Apple have some serious issues when it comes to trying to sue others though and I don't agree with a lot about what they do as a company but I'm not one for buying milk that was produced by happy cows, I buy milk that tastes good, I don't care if it came from a whippet in Uzbekistan that's forced to wear a bowtie and sing the top ten german hits of the Hoff.

I love that iDevice threads always degenerate into this.......
Apple vs the world
SRAM vs Shimano
Windows vs OSX vs Linux
Turkey vs Goose

Everytime someone wants advice on anything vaguely related to these subject it will result in full scale topical war

Did you really just try and compare a 2002 product with a 2007 product and then from that produce something along the lines of "everything Apple has done is better than what others have done". Right.

Oldies vs IT: They dumbed down the interface so that it was simple. Funnily enough you can remove components of other OS so that they are simple too (FYI if you're on a Windows machine this has always been done using the control panel). By dumbing the shit out of Windows I've had my Gran using skype for years. I could have also done that same with Ubuntu.

So, to summarise, apple either eat dick or rock, and the 5 may or may not eat more dick than the 4?

And LJohn, you're living under a rock if you think Mac's can't get viruses. That claim got taken of their website yonks ago, and you can buy Macs out of the box with paid AV programs like Norton for Mac. As for Windows App store, well, I saw numbers once for the number of Apps in the Apple app store and the number that were actually downloaded. Microsoft rivals numbers of useful or well used apps and covers the go-to apps of other markets. Honestly, I think the surface could be practical. Its a portable touchpad that integrates directly and completely with all MS office programs, plus you can run a regular windows desktop on them. They could be more sensible in the business world.
I'm living under the rock of OSX. I have never needed or even considered an antivirus for my OSX installs. That would be why. I'm sure they can get viruses, but the number created to infect OSX seems to be low enough that it's not a problem I'm experiencing.

The Surface Pro with Intel could be, but Windows RT is a clunky, poorly thought out mess. It looks great and it works, but just like Windows Phone as of a few months ago, it just isn't worth it. Yet.

As a disclaimer I frequently use both W7, OSX 10.6 and 10.7. 10.7 was a downgrade, and I assume 10.8 is too. 10.6 is my favourite OS. W7 is also fantastic. It really is all I could want in Windows OS. Saying the alternatives to Apple products are 'better' is ridiculous. They're all fish in the same pond. Depends what you want to eat.

This all brings up an interesting point. Moorey, do you buy an Android and become an iPhone/Apple hating, tech-spec listing and easily wound up Android fan like Diamond Dave up there. Or do you buy another iPhone and irritate your friends with how you bought a 'cool new phone', how it's 'so easy to use' and counter tech-spec arguments with 'it has cool apps'?

Time to choose a side.

EDIT: Moorey, I would make sure you're taking advantage of the updated features. If you don't need the 4G/LTE, why bother? The iPhone 5 is a better phone IMO, but if I was sitting on a 4S, I would wait to upgrade.

i like the 5 better than my 4. i had upgraded the software on the 4 twice so i was essentially running 5 anyway. i haven't bothered with Siri yet but i *am* impressed with that slightly larger screen that still doesn't feel much different in the hand, the clarity of said screen (especially when taking a watching video - and no, i don't mean porn!) and the better sound. i'm with Optus and have no issues with signal or dropout despite the fact that my mobile Optus internet rarely reaches 56k in speed. i love the easy interface, if i wanted a needlessly complex interface with no humidity resistance i'd have bought HTC.

in the years i used it my 4 was crashed on, dropped repeatedly, thrown about in my very cluttered handbag, worn stuffed down my bra (don't tell me you haven't seen women doing this before, and yes, it's very convenient) used constantly for music and lectures, as a browser, notebook, GPS and calendar. i regularly replaced the plastic hardcases and always used a screen film so i have so far never shattered a screen.

it's perfect for a Luddite like myself who just wants the tech to work, dammit!

LJohn, if you go back to my original comment in this thread I gave a suggestion and stated that at the end of the day it comes down to personal taste.

Here are my experiences, by smart phone OSs that I have used:
Android: 1.5, 2.1, 2.2 and 4.1
Windows Phone: 2006 (whatever that was), 7, 7.5 and diddled on 8
Nokia: Symbian 2, Symbian 3, Belle
iOS: 1, 3, 4

The best OS's out of that lot were Belle and Android post 2.2, WP was functional and I don't mind it at all. I found iOS more 'fun and bubbly' that practical which doesn't suit me at all, but if that's all you want then fine.
I would also say that WP8 is brilliant but as I said, only diddled on it rather than used it for a period of time, therefore I will reserve judgement. I will say that open-source seems to go further than locked OSs.

moorey, is there a chance that you have a mate who will swap phones with you for a week or so? I have a friend that buys/sells mobiles so I trade in with him when I want to try new phones or I swap for a week or so within my social group.

Not comparing as such, just pointing that in regards to mobile phone touch interface, plenty of people did it before the 2007 iPhone, the difference is it was never widely liked and accepted until then, plenty of people since the original iPhone have released products with just as nicer touch interface, moving away from resistive touch to capacitive touch and incorporating multi-touch and gestures made touch what it is today, I'm not saying apple did it, I'm saying it was their product that made it user friendly and accepted by the general public as a superior method of UI than physical buttons. If I'm wrong in saying that, please point out to me another mass accepted mobile touch interface prior to the iPhone. The nearest to a revolutionary (publicaly accepted) interface on a mobile prior to the iPhone was the scroll wheel on the blackberry.

Oldies vs IT: They dumbed down the interface so that it was simple. Yes you can dumb down other systems, but that's the point, you have to do something to them in order for non-IT minded individuals to be able to use them, the arguement might be made that iOS products are dumb out of the box, and that arguement is fine however I doubt my gran or yours would have been able to walk into a shop and buy a windows (for example) machine, get home and start using it. An iPad (i pick the iPad because it's the one that my gran chose) however they can buy it, take it home and start using it without the need to make changes. Yet again, I'm not saying you can't do it with other technologies or that other people haven't done it, just that Apple have produced something which is more acceptable to the consumer market as a whole in this area and others, albeit by 'stealing' technologies and ideas from others.

I got an Iphone 5 a few days ago. My 1st Apple product. The only thing I don't like is how you can't sync your phone to itunes on 2 different computers (home & work). Apart from that it seems OK.

My dad has a Samsung Galaxy SII, and I hope I never hear anyone try to compare it to an iPhone.

It is the most useless piece of shit ever, everything about it is clunky and slow and annoying.

I had a 3GS and my next phone will be a 4 or 4S, the Galaxy SII and HTC he had before have completely turned me off Android. Like seriously, unless you are being paid to take it I would never buy an Android phone.

Phone was probably maintained as well as those forks with water.
Did he install a shitload of bloatware on it and never purge it? Cause that ain't normal bro, SII was one of my better Android experiences. Lightning fast and did everything I wanted at the touch of a button.

I dont know about the software stuff, its pretty much brand new and neither of us have the knowledge to change it. Maybe I just dont get the Android way of life but it just annoyed me.

And yeah, Mr iPhone it looks like this now. It had a good life but having a broken camera, wifi, and the screen always going white culminated in me attacking it with a knife.

PINT of Stella. mate!

Many, many Scotches
On the basis that Samsung are a shower of c**ts who owe me a phone after my Galaxy S2 died (yet they claimed water damage and wouldnt honour the warranty) and i reckon owe me a tablet as my galaxy tab is more fussy about connecting to wifi networks than a particularly spoilt little shit would be about mealtimes. Android itself is f***ing useless when it comes to surfing the net so I guess id recommend the Apple route.

Except itunes is a fucking arsehole of a program and you're forced to use it like some sort of downtrodden victorian factory worker who is paid only in vouchers that must be redeemed in the factories shop!

You're fucked either way so I'd suggest buying walkie-talkies instead as there are never any network issues, they look cool and you just cant beat saying 'Roger'!
