That looks absolutely terrifying. Is the assumption that the bike rider was using the crossing and got hit? The skid mark suggests there was a fair pace on. How sad.
Exactly the assumption, bike rider going, car coming at speed, its used as a 'shortcut' for some people to get from the city through to the south of Canberra, skips some of the peakhour traffic heading that way out of the city so more often than not its like a racetrack at peak time.

Yes, this. I used to skip traffic going that way when I lived in that area. I'd often see cyclists waiting and crossing there and gave me an icky feeling. Something not quite right about it, it's in a bit of a hollow with trees around and perhaps not as easy to spot as it could be.

No excuse from the driver though. Happened at 2:30pm so I'd wager it was someone distracted rushing to school pickup.

Worst time to be on the road with a bike or car around a school here, they usually dart to the shops of cafe before pick up and then drive like a looney when they're late to pick the kids up.
Canberra has an interesting traffic dynamic in that there isn't much of a peak hour. You get maybe thirty minutes in the morning and evening and a bit around school time.

Generally you can cruise around at the speed limit everywhere, which in places is 80 or 100 on bigger roads.

As a result you often see rear-end pile ups when people unexpectedly encounter stopped or slow-moving traffic at other times.

So, I did a bit of scrolling on Google Maps before responding. The road is zoned as 70kph, and there are 2x warning signs leading up to the crossing, so there is ample warning.

It's a bit hard to tell, but the guess is they were on the crossing or about to cross rather than on the road itself.

I did often see people crossing when lights for them were red. I suspect there's a long wait for it to change and people get impatient.

Not that I'm suggesting that was the case.

Coming from the other direction to @bear the bear's pic is where I would get the heebie jeebies:

I used to come past that crossing pretty regularly and can confirm a lot of people just made their own call on whether it was safe to cross without bothering to activate the lights. Suspect I probably did the couple of times I went over the road there…

But gotta wonder if someone was driving so fast to catch you out doing that, than they’d probably not the sort to stop for a red light there either.
Wonder what the ACT roads department will do there in response to this one

EBay sellers...

I ordered a new snowboard bag in spring last year. The delivery took months and it arrived while I was in japan, using my busted up old bag and some gaff tape. Anyway I get the bag when I am home and the thing is a piece of crap (I feel a bit like Neil young). It has no wheels, is smaller than advertised, and is especially flimsy. So the forward and backward has begun...I am hoping to get a refund on the purchase price and free return post.

I use a DB Snowroller for my skis, pretty happy with it. Well made and doesn't have the embarrassing sag most others do.

That is the main reason I ride the pathways as much as I can. It might not be as direct but I'm not going to get run down by some dickhead.
Yeah me too.

I can ride into town to my office via a 16km route that takes in a big busy multi-lane road, or take a scenic 20km route where 19km is cycle/pedestrian only, goes along the lake and through the golf course and often isn't anywhere near a road at all.

Only takes 10-15 minutes more and completely relaxing.

Yeah the newer signs for crossings in the new Suburbs are actually fluro yellow so I think catches the eye a bit more, these ones are the same shade used for round abouts, speed bumps etc. It was on the agenda for Pedal Power (the local Riders Advocacy group) to get the signs updated around the lake, but I'm not sure what happened to that.

Fuck.... she was on the road, not the crossing
This is kinda what I was getting at in the back of my head, the marks on the road don't really suggest this fuckwit wasn't paying attention to someone crossing the road and reacting badly at the last minute. Those marks don't look like a locked up tyre as ABS takes care of that. This guy has either looped out losing control or..................he was aiming for her.
Or, the cops have this all arse up and she was crossing the road and this deadshit swerved to miss her.

Little things I hate: Cyclists thinking that the law allowing them to ride on a shit part of road is some sort of protective coating. And conversely, authorities saying a shit part of road is okay to ride on. There needs to be more roads prohibited from cycling, you can have many an encounter with a cyclist just riding along while you're just driving along and shit gets real. We have many spots around town here that people ride on that are woeful and dangerous. And these aren't people commuting, it is people beating yesty's Strava time. Make better choices on your bike and don't chance ruining someone's day who is just getting from A to B. :(

got caught in stand still traffic today, finally got home and hear its another motorcyclist fighting for life. i'm at a nostalgic age about riding, and would love to get back on a bike but that line between safety and death seems way too fine with sydney drivers. recent one that was caught on film on epping road was horrifying

Possibly looking at the phone screen, the impact on the car looks like around 80~100kms.

Not even safe on foot here.
