got caught in stand still traffic today, finally got home and hear its another motorcyclist fighting for life. i'm at a nostalgic age about riding, and would love to get back on a bike but that line between safety and death seems way too fine with sydney drivers. recent one that was caught on film on epping road was horrifying
There's nothing like riding a motorbike though, the joys outweigh the negative moments. Just have to be very aware, thats the only key thing and alert at all times. In a car people seem to get a bit complacent and new cars especially, the phone like tablets that act as a dash seem to take a lot of their attention away from the road. 90% of my commuting to the office in Brisbane is on a motorbike, granted a 300cc isn't ideal or to 'fun' for commuting just over an hour and a half on the highway, but you can't beat the feeling of just being out there, I think its good for mental health to.

i thought a small peaky 2 stroke 250 was the perfect commuting machine at uni. highway riding not so much, but there's only so much you can do for your own safety around the average driver. getting hit up with lots of ads for things like the vulcan 800. I have no doubt i wouldnt be as dumb on a bike as i was back in the day. its a very personal decision

Yes, this. I used to skip traffic going that way when I lived in that area. I'd often see cyclists waiting and crossing there and gave me an icky feeling. Something not quite right about it, it's in a bit of a hollow with trees around and perhaps not as easy to spot as it could be.

No excuse from the driver though. Happened at 2:30pm so I'd wager it was someone distracted rushing to school pickup.
My 25km each way commute has about 6km of it that isn't off road pathway. That section is dual carriageway 80-90kph highway. I can't get around it and it's not that pleasant a ride. There has been a concerted effort to build the coastal pathway that runs almost the whole length of Northwest Coast of Tassie and has been under construction for a couple of decades now. The local council (Burnie) that is responsible for this section, recently washed their hands of it, stating it was too hard (even though it isn't). Once councillor even commented in the paper that no one has died on their bike in that section so there's no need for it. Meaning someone has to die for him to change his mind.

I use a DB Snowroller for my skis, pretty happy with it. Well made and doesn't have the embarrassing sag most others do.

Bag on the way to retirement is a burton that I've had for about 7 years. In theory they offer a lifetime warranty...the zip has torn out of the bag material. Happened when i was in nz last year. At some stage I am going to chase them up, but I don't expect them to come good. This ebay cheap-o was to be a short term solution, but it is bad even for that. Sigh...

Unfortunately this usually doesn't mean your lifetime, but the lifetime of a bag as determined by Burton....

Very much so. I've known a few people to receive miracle service, but I won't hold out for it.

What I will hold out for is more sales! Bring on the miracle sales...

This is kinda what I was getting at in the back of my head, the marks on the road don't really suggest this fuckwit wasn't paying attention to someone crossing the road and reacting badly at the last minute. Those marks don't look like a locked up tyre as ABS takes care of that. This guy has either looped out losing control or..................he was aiming for her.
Or, the cops have this all arse up and she was crossing the road and this deadshit swerved to miss her.

Little things I hate: Cyclists thinking that the law allowing them to ride on a shit part of road is some sort of protective coating. And conversely, authorities saying a shit part of road is okay to ride on. There needs to be more roads prohibited from cycling, you can have many an encounter with a cyclist just riding along while you're just driving along and shit gets real. We have many spots around town here that people ride on that are woeful and dangerous. And these aren't people commuting, it is people beating yesty's Strava time. Make better choices on your bike and don't chance ruining someone's day who is just getting from A to B. :(
I've probably taken this the wrong way, but I don't reckon it's super appropriate to be having a crack essentially stating that cyclists who ride on shit roads are irresponsible, during the consideration of an event for which all the evidence suggests that a driver has killed an innocent person on account of their own unlawful fuckwittery.

That's the way I read it as well, I hope I'm just a bit thick and not understanding it as implied so decided not to reply, especially with what I perceive to be a classic case of victim blaming.

Sorry, I wasn't implying the girl in Canberra was riding in a shit spot. That scene looks entirely like the driver is 169% at fault and the whole thing was avoidable. My point was aimed at the people on bikes who don't plan ahead with their bike ride and cause avoidable problems for other road users. There's safe places to ride your bike and there's terrible places to ride your bike.

The Indian Pacific Wheel Race (IndyPac) kicked off last week but early this morning there were 2 hit-run incidents in WA.

One rider seriously injured and the other was a fatality :(

All riders have stopped, nothing has been said yet but I would think they have called it off.

Unfortunately, the route makes the event unsafe, and it should not be held. Three incidents, including two fatalities, should be the end of it.

Which is pretty shit.

I've driven that route and 95% is dead quiet. Even with the rollers across the Nullarbor, the sight lines are good and you can see stuff a mile away.

I would put money on the truck drivers either being fatigued, high or not giving enough space/slowing down when there was incoming traffic.

We passed a guy walking that route self supported, pushing a trolley. It was pretty easy to give him a wide berth. By all reports he made it safely to Sydney.

Jeezus, I'm sure that race must be cursed.

New little niggle out of nowhere that you have to google. Is it nothing or is it something to get ahead of?
(In my case, R heel pain for no reason).
I'm going with either Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis. The pain spot seems exactly between the two spots those pains might be.

Oh boy, both are shit. Tell me, when you first step out of bed does it feel like your heel has been hit with a sledgehammer? That's a fasciitis thing. I'm sure you've looked into what causes it but after suffering it for two years and conquering it, I can give you four things that will do everything possible to cure it:
1) Calf stretching! Pull your toes towards your shin so you feel the strain in your calf muscles. Do it for ages, like the entire length of a move. Get bike tube and wrap it under your feet and pull so it stretches your calves.
2) Calf raises. You need to support your feet with your calf muscles. Stand in a doorway at home, hold yourself steady and lift up onto your toes. You can try adding weights but anything will help. Do it until you can feel your calf muscles supporting you. It can hurt the arch of your foot but that is the point.
3) Get one of the hard plastic spikey balls from Kmart (a bit bigger than a tennis ball) and roll it under the arch of your foot. You'll feel it crunching the sore parts of your tendons, keep going on that in the second half of your movie. ;)
4) Keep an ice cream container full of water frozen. Fill a big bucket with water, chuck the ice cube in and soak your feet in the ice cold water. Yep, even in winter. It helps so much.
I had both feet explode with fasciitis at the same time and it was fucking brutal. I could barely walk properly for 18 months but persisted playing basketball. The stuff I mentioned above was started about 6 months after the problem started and I stuck with it seeing small improvements each week. All of a sudden it felt amazing and thankfully I've 99% cured it. Try it, this stuff worked for me after two physio's said I was too old to cure it. ;)

More than 2 things that can cause heal pain and if the pain isn't in the right spot for either of your first guesses then I'd look for something else.

... to cure it. ;)
Thanks.
I had plantar fasciitis last year while doing the Gibb River road, so just ignored it and kept doing all the hikes etc, and then spike balled the hell out of my foot once back to home. Luckily it sorted itself out.
I think it might be because I've have a sore lumbar region so that puts other muscles etc out of whack.
Will see a professional if it doesn't settle quickly
