Welby Round 4 Sept 16

Southern Highlands Cycle Club is hosting the 4th round of STM series on the 16th September. We have been working with Wingecarribee Shire Council in presenting to you the local track at Welby (via Mittagong). For any interested in riding at this venue please follow the link here for a map of the track.

Please note:
1) the track is accessed during normal hours by parking nearby to Welby Hockey Fields and cemetery on Meranie St., the track is straight after the metal gates adjacent the cemetery... look at the map please!
2) the local speed limit in Welby streets is 50kph and is enforced.... be warned!
3) we are working with WSC in signage of the whole track, however this will be not available for a few weeks and for the time being you will need the map on the website to find your way - there are many tracks to become disorientated by. (gps trace will follow) Essentially the track is clockwise...
4) there is a section of track which you will find that has been ripped up by motorcycles - we are hoping to have this groomed before race day
5) the track is a mix of single track - some easy, some rocky sections, rock gardens, pinches and fireroad climbs. We anticipate the track will be just over 10km in length on race day (a section for race day is not marked on the above link). It is a different kind of track cf Coondoo which is sandy and flowing. Welby is punchy and quite varied and a lot more rocky.
6) you could try and meet up with locals via our Facebook site.

Could anyone tell me if we will be able to camp at the Welby track - as we could for the last few races?

thanks
We're just waiting on more information from the Southern Highlands Cycling Club to be able to confirm this, and put up the full Round 4 information. Hope to let you know very soon! But we certainly hope to offer camping.

Cheers

[h=3]Welby, nr Mittagong, NSW Southern Highands, hosted by Southern Highlands Cycling Club - Sunday 16 September 2012[/h]
[h=3]Southern Highlands Cycling Club[/h] The Southern Highlands Cycling Club is based in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales (one hour south of Sydney). The Club was founded sixty years ago to support road and track cycling, with mountain biking providing the strongest area of growth in recent years. Mountain bike events and racing are held regularly throughout the year, at three sites: Wingello, Fitzroy Falls and Welby. As well, the club organises several large mountain biking events each year, including the James Williamson Enduro Challenge in March, the NSW XCO State Series in August, and one round of the SRAM Singletrack Mind Series in 2011 and 2012. Details of all club programs are available on the website www.southernhighlandscc.com.au.
[h=3]The Course[/h] This event will feature the full 8hr duration, and the venue is Welby, south of Mittagong. The tracks at Welby have been established for several years, with a few new trails added recently for the upcoming round, resulting in a course that is 10.4km long. It consists predominantly of singletrack, connected up by short sections of fire road. The track winds through sandy eucalypt forest, up and down over several rocky outcrops and flows over flatter terrain as well, providing challenges and enjoyment for all levels of riding.
A GPS trace of the proposed course can be found here.
[h=3]Entries[/h] Entries for Round 4 of the Singletrack Mind Series are are available here and will close at midnight on Wednesday 12 September. We are not accepting any entries on the day, however substitute riders are allowed. All substitute riders must download, fill out and bring the Replacement Rider Form to Registration. If your new rider is not a MTBA member they will need to pay $20 (cash only) for a MTBA day licence even if the rider they are replacing has already paid for a day licence online – the insurance policy always stays with the individual. Day licences are not transferable BUT the unused day licence will be refunded to the rider who originally paid for it in online entry – minus a buck ($1) for administration.

[h=3]Series T-Shirt[/h] We thought last year's shirt was an absolute winner, you obviously loved it too, and we wondered how on earth we were going to come up with anything that could improve on or even equal it for 2012! Thankfully our fantastic graphic designer, who also happens to be a keen mountain biker, Chris from 5 Degrees North, came up with the goods and we're stoked to reveal this year's t-shirt, available once again in both mens and ladies sizes, and colours - sky blue for the guys and light blue for the girls. Click on the image for a larger view!
You can order your shirt with event entry for $25, and you’ll pick it up at Rego. We'll also have some available to purchase at the event for $25 (cash only).
[h=3]Series Jersey[/h] Sponsor Zerofive Custom Sportswear has come up with a fantastic design for this year's Singletrack Mind Series jersey. Available to puchase with your entry for only $75, they come in both men and ladies fit, with a full length zip for the boys and a 3/4 zip for the girls.
Sizing Guide Here
Note that we're just doing limited order runs of the jersey, so if you want to guarantee yours to pick up at Round 2, you'll have to order it ASAP! Otherwise, we'll get it to you at a future round or via good old snail mail!
[h=3]Accommodation & Dining[/h] There is plenty of great accommodation available in the Southern Highlands. See the Tourism Southern Highlands website or call 1300 657 559 for more details. Mittagong is the closest town with lots of dining options and Bowral is just 3km further away with plenty of restaurants and take-aways there too.
[h=3]Directions[/h] Coming from Sydney: Head south on the F5 South Western Freeway and take the exit for the Old Hume Highway to Mittagong/Bowral. Continue for 8.5km and turn right into Meranie Street. Take the 7th turn right into Colo Street. There will be event signage to follow from Meranie Street.
Coming from the South: Head north on the F5 South Western Freeway and then take the exit for the Old Hume Highway to Mittagong. Turn right onto the Old Hume Highway and then take the second left into Meranie Street. Take the 7th turn right into Colo Street. There will be event signage to follow from Meranie Street.

[h=3]Rules & Conditions[/h] Please read the event Rules & Conditions and let us know if you need any clarification of these!
[h=3]What To Bring[/h] Except for the obvious (bike, helmet, race food, toolkit & spares), you might want to bring a pop-up tent for shelter beside the track, and a chair to relax in between laps.
MTBA members must present their membership card at Registration, and riders under 18 must have a parent or guardian present to sign the event waiver on their behalf.
[h=3]Results & Live Updates[/h] Results will be available at http://chocolatefoot.racetectiming.com during the event and PDF files posted here after each round.
Also, you can view Twitter updates as they are posted via the Enduro Pulse Live website, using hashtag #SRAMstm.
[h=3]Volunteers[/h] We're looking for willing people to join our event crew - if you'd like to volunteer to help us out on race day we'd really appreciate it! The type of roles for volunteers might be marshalling, Registration, event centre set up, assisting with timing, etc. Volunteers will be well looked after during the event, and hopefully you'll find it gratifying to know you've helped the participants have a fun day on their bikes!
If you'd like to be involved, please fill out this form to register. Note that you can select your availability for each round on the form.
[h=3]Questions?[/h] If you have any questions about this event, please don't hesitate to contact us by email up until 11am Friday 14 September or by phone - 0447 084 552. No SMS please, it's too time-consuming and we can't guarantee to respond.

Just a reminder to those looking to camp at Welby 15th-16th September - yes there will be camping available Saturday night! We have some nice sites mown ready for you.

Don't forget - if you're camping (or indeed staying in the Highlands) - Bowral and Mittagong have some awesome food outlets. May I suggest - the Scottish Arms in Bowral (as my daughter and son in law own it)! Ring for a booking. There are heaps of places to eat!

As for the weather - it's looking good! You won't need your thermals!

Come and enjoy the trails.

If you haven't entered yet - do so - you won't be sorry. Bring your mates and have a great day!

Bad Experiences

Having had a bad experience with the Chocolate Foot organisers, I am wondering if anyone else in this thread has had any problems with the races or organisers?
If so, please PM me as it would be inappropriate to discuss in the open in this thread, but I am very keen to discuss it in private.

Sorry, I've got nothing but good things to say about them. I have only been to 11 of their races, but the ones I've been to have been well organised with a great vibe. As for other riders, I've been subject to a couple of marginal passing manoeuvres in that time - but that's literally "2" in 11 races. I'm sure less confident/slower riders may have a higher count, but that's obviously not the race organisers fault. Unfortunately in the heat of the moment, some people (d1ckheads?) may value some Kenda Tyres and a Jimmy Jack wine voucher above the enjoyment of others.

On another note, how cool is Gumby!?
